Pre-match comments
Portugal will travel to Hungary with the goal of winning their second consecutive match in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers. In the opening match, coach Roberto Martinez's team had a perfect start when they crushed Armenia 5-0 to rise to the top of Group F. On the contrary, Hungary dropped the unfortunate victory when they were held to a 2-2 draw by the Republic of Ireland, despite leading 2-0 after only 15 minutes of play.
Hungary had a glorious past with 2 World Cup runners-up positions (1938, 1954) and 2 quarter-final appearances (1962, 1966). However, nearly 40 years have passed and they have not participated in the biggest football festival on the planet since Mexico 1986. This qualifying round therefore has a special significance.
In the last three EUROs, Hungary has qualified but has not made a clear mark, and competing directly with Portugal in Group F is certainly a huge challenge.
Meanwhile, the European Selecao are showing a strong comeback. Against Armenia, Joao Felix and Cristiano Ronaldo both scored twice, while Joao Cancelo scored the winning goal.
Ronaldo, who has scored 140 international goals, is still an endless source of inspiration for the maroon team. Although not considered a strong candidate for the World Cup, Portugal, with its star-studded squad, is still capable of going far.
The EURO 2016 champions have also added to their tally of Nations League wins earlier this year, and are currently on a four-match winning streak in all competitions.
A victory over Hungary will help coach Martinez and his team firmly consolidate their position at the top of the table, while affirming their ambition to reach what could be the last World Cup in Cristiano Ronaldo's career.
Form, head-to-head history
The two teams have a clear difference in form. Hungary has only won 1 of their last 6 matches, while Portugal has won 3 of their last 6 matches (in 90 minutes of official play).
In terms of head-to-head history, Portugal has the complete advantage with 10 wins and 4 draws after 14 encounters since the first time in December 1926. In the most recent meeting in June 2021, "Selecao" easily defeated Hungary with a score of 3-0.
Force information
Hungary will be without Roland Sallai, who is suspended following his second-half red card against Ireland. Barna Toth is likely to be given a starting spot instead.
Dominik Szoboszlai has enjoyed a superb start to the season for Liverpool and will continue to be Hungary's midfield maestro when he takes on Portugal.
On the away team side, coach Martinez is likely to only change one position compared to the match against Armenia, with Bernardo Silva returning to the starting lineup, replacing Pedro Neto.
Cristiano Ronaldo took his international goalscoring tally to 140 after netting a brace against Armenia. At 40, he will still be at the heart of Portugal's attack against Hungary.
Expected lineup
Hungary: Dibusz; Nego, Orban, Szalai, Kerkez; Styles; Bolla, A. Toth, Szoboszlai, B. Toth; Varga
Portugal: Costa; Cancelo, Dias, Inacio, Mendes; J. Neves, Vitinha, Fernandes; B. Silva, Ronaldo, Felix
