Stepping onto the track, taking her stride, making the final sprint to become the first to cross the finish line in the 5,000m race, and then talking about her goal of winning gold medals in all the events she participates in – all of this has become a habit for Nguyen Thi Oanh.
At the 33rd SEA Games in Supachalasai, the 32nd SEA Games in Modorok, the 31st SEA Games at My Dinh Stadium, and in previous SEA Games, Nguyen Thi Oanh consistently won gold medals. There was never any chance for surprises. The golden girl of Vietnamese athletics has been incredibly consistent.
Not only that, as time goes by and she gets older, Nguyen Thi Oanh is getting better and better. While two years ago in Cambodia, the girl born in 1995 completed the 5,000m race in 17'00"33, this year in Thailand, Nguyen Thi Oanh only needed 16'27"14.

"Athletics involves running in sweltering heat or torrential rain, and sometimes in freezing winter weather. But every profession, every sport has its own hardships. What we must do is accept them and consider them part of achieving our goals. I always believe in striving harder every day, every training session, and every competition, and making sure that today is always better than yesterday," Oanh shared in a conversation with a reporter from Tien Phong newspaper .
On the evening of December 13th in Supachalasai, Nguyen Thi Oanh once again emphasized, "Having chosen the career of an athlete, everyone always has goals and strives for better achievements, so I aim for the best possible results in every event I compete in."
And so, while her rivals strived to catch up with Nguyen Thi Oanh, she relentlessly pushed herself further ahead. This never-ending chase had only one predictable outcome: Nguyen Thi Oanh was the winner.

The news is not good for her rivals, but Nguyen Thi Oanh is even more ambitious, setting herself a bigger goal: to become the Vietnamese and Southeast Asian track and field athlete with the most gold medals in SEA Games history.
With the gold medal she just won, she has equaled the record of 13 gold medals held by her senior, Nguyen Thi Huyen, who retired after the 32nd SEA Games. Just one more gold medal and Nguyen Thi Oanh will set a new milestone.
"I hope that luck will continue to smile upon me," Nguyen Thi Oanh humbly said. In truth, the golden girl of Vietnamese athletics doesn't need it, because her talent, willpower, and insatiable desire to win never run out; she always controls her own destiny.
