The ugly and chaotic scene took place right after the match between Zhejiang and Buriram United in the AFC Champions League on the evening of November 30. When the final whistle blew at the Huzhou Olympic Sports Centre, in Huzhou, China (in this match Zhejiang won 3-2), players from both teams rushed into a brawl. After a few minutes of fighting, the "hot heads" cooled down.
"Regardless of the cause of the brawl, it is clear that the visiting team Buriram United did not have the necessary protection. Buriram United striker Ramil Sheydayev was punched and kicked by Zhejiang players. This is a very brutal image for a football match, many images and clips posted on social media show the extent of the incident went too far," shared ESPN 's Paul Murphy.
This is not the first brawl that has occurred in Asia this year. Half a year ago, in the final match of the 32nd SEA Games between U.22 Thailand and U.22 Indonesia, the players also fought each other twice.
Violence broke out between Zhejiang Club and Buriram Club
After U.22 Thailand striker Yodsakorn Burapha scored the equalizer 2-2 in injury time, Thai players ran around the technical area of U.22 Indonesia to provoke. "Irritated" with their opponents, the coaching staff and U.22 Indonesia players got into a fight with the U.22 Thailand team. Dozens of security personnel had to enter the field to intervene to relieve the tension.
In the announcement, AFC identified 7 members of the U.22 Indonesia team, including 3 players, 4 officials and coaches. The U.22 Thailand team also had 7 members involved in the brawl, including 2 players and 5 officials and coaches. Most of these people were punished by AFC with a 6-match ban and fines of up to 1,000 USD each.
In March this year, an amateur match in Zhejiang province saw dozens of players and coaching staff members fighting and brawling on the field. Amateur football in China has been plagued by brawls in recent years. Players cannot control their anger and are ready to fight if they are fouled.
Another Asian team caught up in violence this year was Indonesia U20. Coach Shin Tae-yong’s team showed superior class when leading their opponents 4-0 until the 88th minute, in the context of Fiji U20 having had two players sent off earlier.
However, a dispute between the two teams occurred at the end of the match. U.20 Indonesia player Frengky Missa fiercely fought for the ball with U20 Fiji player, causing some players of the Oceania representative to feel "hot-eyed".
Midfielder Pawan Singh of U.20 Fiji lost his temper and continuously threw two punches at Missa's face. Number 9 of the home team, Hokky Caraka retaliated against his teammate who was lying on the ground just a few seconds later.
Players from both teams then immediately rushed at each other despite the intervention of the coaching staff. The brawl ended with Pawn Pratap Singh (U.20 Fiji) and Hokky Caraka (U.20 Indonesia) receiving straight red cards.
Back to the AFC Champions League brawl between Zhejiang FC and Buriram United FC. Thai press reported that the AFC (Asian Football Confederation) has opened an investigation, and it is likely that Zhejiang FC will be severely punished.
In contrast, Chinese media said that Buriram players had sparked the fight, in which Thai team captain Theerathon Bunmathan was one of the most "active" participants.
