Almost dropped out of college due to difficult circumstances
Dinh Thi Xuyen (12A1 student, Muong Bi High School) was born and raised in Phu Cuong commune, Tan Lac district, Hoa Binh province in a near-poor family. Her father worked as a hired worker in Hanoi, and Xuyen, her mother and younger sister took turns looking after a small stall in their hometown.
On the day of checking her 2024 high school graduation exam results, knowing that she got 3 perfect scores, Xuyen was extremely surprised and happy. She and her mother held hands and ran around the house with joy.
Xuyen scored 8 points in Literature, and got perfect scores in the Social Science subjects History, Geography, and Civic Education . She is also the only student in Hoa Binh province this year to score three 10 points. With the results achieved, Xuyen plans to apply to study Primary Education at Hanoi National University.
Xuyen has a passion for social subjects, especially History. However, she does not go to extra classes but mainly studies at home to reduce the burden on her family.
"Every day, I finish my housework before I start studying. That's usually around 8 or 9 pm. For social subjects, I focus on learning and mastering the basic knowledge before reviewing the advanced forms," Xuyen shared.
During the first two years of high school, busy farming made Xuyen neglect her studies. Entering grade 12, realizing the importance of the high school graduation exam, the female student devoted all her time to studying and had a spectacular "comeback".
Xuyen shared that her dream is to become a teacher to bring knowledge to students. Since childhood, Xuyen has liked serious environments and shining images on the podium. However, there was a time when this dream was interrupted, because the family's economic conditions were difficult and she could not afford to pay for university tuition.
"At that time, I was very sad. I planned to stop studying and change to working as a factory worker. That was also the time when I neglected my studies and almost gave up. I understood my family's situation so I just accepted it," Xuyen confided.
Luckily, when she entered 12th grade, Xuyen's dream of becoming a teacher was once again ignited. Her family's business was better, and her parents encouraged her to continue her studies.
"That day, my mother called me in and told me to try my best to study. Your parents will do their best to help you develop in the best environment. I couldn't help but cry. That was also the motivation for me to get high scores in the recent exam," the Muong ethnic female student was moved.
The will to overcome difficulties - good study in remote areas
Born in a remote village, and also the eldest sister in the family, in addition to studying, Xuyen also takes on other important jobs. Every day, her schedule is regular: in the morning she goes to school, in the afternoon she helps her mother herd buffalo, sell potatoes, corn, bamboo rice, grilled meat at Thung Khe Pass, along Highway 6 from Hanoi to Mai Chau.
There were days when Xuyen woke up early at 6am to go up to the mountain pass to sell her goods. On busy days, the student and her mother watched over the goods until 10pm. Not having time to go home, the mother and daughter hung up a mosquito net to sleep right there on the mountain pass.
Despite the hardship, Xuyen never skipped a single class. She always came to class on time and completed all the homework assigned by the teacher. If there was a lot of homework, Xuyen would bring it to the stall and take advantage of her free time to do it.
Ms. Bui Thi O (Xuyen's mother) shared that as the eldest sister, from a young age, the female student soon realized her role and responsibility in the family. Not only did she diligently help her parents with housework, Xuyen also took good care of her younger siblings.
“My family works very hard in agriculture. We sell some agricultural products but the income is not much. Because I don't want my children to have to suffer like me in the future, I advise them to try hard in their studies,” said Ms. O.
Speaking to reporters, teacher Dao Thu Hien, Principal of Muong Bi High School, said she felt overwhelmed when she received the news that Xuyet had achieved 3 perfect scores for all three subjects. At school, the female student is very well-behaved, has a strong will and a progressive attitude.
Xuyen's family lives in a particularly difficult area (area 135). Her parents are self-employed, so their economy is not well off. After school, Xuyen often helps her parents herd buffalo and sell goods on Thung Khe pass. She is good at all subjects, but especially loves History.
"In the future, Xuyen dreams of becoming a History teacher. She has worked very hard and tried hard to achieve such results. The teachers are very proud of her," Ms. Hien affirmed.
On July 29, Secretary of the Hoa Binh Provincial Party Committee Nguyen Phi Long visited, encouraged and presented gifts to Dinh Thi Xuyen, Muong Bi High School, Tan Lac District. The Secretary of the Hoa Binh Provincial Party Committee presented a laptop to help the female student have better learning conditions on her upcoming university journey.
Mr. Nguyen Phi Long emphasized that the achievement of 3 points 10 in the graduation exam that Dinh Thi Xuyen achieved is not only the honor and pride of herself and her family, but also the pride of the whole Hoa Binh province and Muong Bi High School, Tan Lac district. The female student is a shining example for generations of students in the province to learn and follow.
