Báo Thanh niênBáo Thanh niên11/11/2024

Doctors have just performed emergency surgery, successfully reattaching the severed arm of a male worker due to a work accident.

On November 11, information from Can Tho General Hospital said that the hospital's doctors had just performed emergency surgery to reconnect and successfully preserve the left arm of a patient who had been severed due to a work accident.

Earlier, in the early morning of November 6, patient PMT (36 years old, residing in Co Do District, Can Tho City) was transporting construction materials at a construction site when his sleeve got caught in the pulley gear and was caught, severing his left arm. Immediately after, the patient was given first aid by his colleagues and transferred to Can Tho City General Hospital.

Doctors examine the patient's arm after successfully reattaching it.

Upon admission, the patient was in traumatic shock, with massive blood loss, unmeasurable pulse and blood pressure, exposed humerus, skin peeling, and exposed deltoid, biceps, and triceps muscles.

Immediately afterwards, the surgical team including doctors from the Department of Emergency Resuscitation, Department of Trauma and Burn Surgery, Department of Thoracic Surgery and Department of Surgery - Anesthesia and Resuscitation urgently consulted and coordinated emergency surgery, hemostasis, fluid and blood transfusion to resolve the patient's shock.

However, realizing that this was a very serious condition and that time was running out to reattach the limb to save it, the surgical team ordered an emergency transfer to the operating room to both resuscitate and perform surgery to reattach the severed arm.

Accordingly, the Trauma and Burn Surgery Department performed combined fixation of the left humerus with an external fixator; the Thoracic Surgery Department performed debridement of both ends of the arm, clearing the blood vessels of the severed limb; simultaneously connecting the artery to the brachial artery, the vein to the vein, connecting the nerves, suturing the muscles and skin, and incising the skin to relieve pressure on the forearm. After reconnecting, examination showed that the patient's blood vessels were circulating well.

According to doctors, upper limb transplants are extremely complicated and to be successful, in addition to the coordinated efforts of the teams, it also depends on many factors. For example, the limb is severed due to a sharp cut or bruising of the muscle tissue, blood vessels, and nerves; the preservation of the severed limb to the hospital must be clean, with an ideal temperature of 5 to 10 degrees; the time to bring the patient and the severed limb to the hospital must be earlier than 6 hours...

Currently, the patient's surgical wound is healing, the hand is doing well and is gradually recovering.
