Agriculture in the digital age

Digital technology is “knocking on the door” of agricultural households in Thai Nguyen. Not only farms, many households have boldly applied technology to agricultural production. The most practical thing is that farmers in the 4.0 technology era have made changes when “digitalization” helps reduce labor, investment costs, improve product quality, and make output more favorable.

Improve production efficiency

Thai Nguyen currently has over 1,250 livestock farms, most of which have applied scientific and technical advances in management.

For example, the poultry farm and egg hatchery of Mr. Nguyen Van Duong, in Huong Son town (Phu Binh). Established in 2002, the farm has an area of 20,000m2, currently raising 20,000 egg-laying chickens (crossbred Dong Tao chickens), with a scale of 13 poultry hatcheries, supplying the market with about 200,000 chicks/month, creating jobs for 13 local workers with an average income of about 7-8 million VND/person/month.

Mr. Duong said: Previously, raising and hatching were done entirely manually, which not only required manpower but also took time. The breeds were often not guaranteed and did not meet market demand due to the low hatching rate, only about 75%. After that, I decided to switch from manual incubators to automatic island incubators. To ensure the source of eggs for automatic incubators, I cooperated with other farmers in the area, from technical guidance to investing in quality breeds, veterinary medicine and purchasing all eggs from affiliated farms, achieving very good results.

"Riding on the momentum", Mr. Duong continued to apply technology to stages such as: automatic food and water supply, automatic cooling water system, 24/7 surveillance cameras, incubation system designed by himself and Vietnamese engineers.

Mr. Duong added: Applying science and technology and digital transformation has helped me reduce from 25 to 13 workers/month, saving 90 million/month; the hatching rate has increased from 75% to 99% (profit increased by 40-45 million VND/month).

In the field of cultivation, digitalization in the care stage (automatic irrigation system); preservation of agricultural products (cold storage); implementation of safe production processes... has also brought practical results to farmers.

In particular, Phu Do Safe Tea Cooperative (Phu Luong) is a pioneer in applying science, technology and digital transformation in tea production.

Mr. Hoang Van Tuan, 32 years old, Director of the Cooperative, said: Since 2023, we have applied the Facefarm electronic production diary to tea production. This not only helps manage production and improve labor productivity but also strengthens the connection between producers and consumers. The Cooperative currently has more than 10 hectares of tea certified to meet VietGAP standards. Since boldly transforming digitally in production, the selling price of tea has reached 200-300 thousand VND/kg; the income of Cooperative members and people has increased by about 10-20%.

Many tea producers have applied digital technology to control equipment serving tea production (tea roasting machines, tea rolling machines...).

Mr. Nguyen Ta, Head of the Provincial Department of Cultivation and Plant Protection, affirmed that applying digital technology to agricultural production, especially in the field of cultivation, not only saves labor costs and water resources but also reduces dependence on weather, better controls diseases, and increases crop productivity.

It is worth mentioning that the application of high technology in agriculture (growing vegetables, tubers, fruits, flowers, etc. in greenhouses and net houses) also helps optimize the production process, improve the quality and value of products. Farmers can easily adjust environmental factors such as humidity, light, temperature, creating the best conditions for plants to grow.

Accompanying the people

Digitalization in agricultural production is an inevitable trend. However, Mr. Nguyen Van Duong said that the state needs to accompany and support farmers in applying digital technology in production.

Mr. Duong shared: We hope that the State will develop policies to support livestock and crop farming households and businesses participating in agricultural production to invest in digital transformation. At the same time, build successful digital transformation models so that farmers and businesses can visit, learn and apply; organize training courses on technology use and data management skills for farmers; support connections between farmers and technology businesses and credit institutions. Especially pay attention to building an information system on digital transformation solutions in agricultural production for people to easily access.

By applying digital technology to production, Thai Nguyen farmers have created many safe tea products to meet market demand.

Expressing his views on digitalization in agricultural production, Mr. Tuan said that the provincial authorities should increase propaganda and dissemination of the benefits of digital transformation to raise people's awareness. In particular, farmers should be encouraged to use modern electronic devices, participate in discussions on how to apply high technology and invite farmers who have successfully transformed digitally to share their experiences...

Along with that, the provincial authorities and functional branches need to pay attention to solving some difficulties in information technology infrastructure (focusing on investment in mountainous and highland communes, ensuring stable and quality internet connection); attracting businesses to invest in technology in agriculture; increasing the number of households applying digital technology in agricultural production... At the same time, organize to connect farmers with agricultural experts through digital platforms; apply artificial intelligence, analyze, evaluate, exploit the data platform of the agricultural sector to serve the work and forecast in agricultural production...
