Vietnam team still missing Nguyen Filip

The list of Vietnam's team preparing for the match against Laos in the 2027 Asian Cup qualifiers has been announced by coach Kim Sang-sik.

This training session still does not have goalkeeper Nguyen Filip but witnessed the return of striker Xuan Son, nearly 1 year after suffering a serious injury in the second leg of the AFF Cup 2024 final. In addition, coach Kim Sang-sik also welcomed the return of goalkeeper Dinh Trieu, who is in very good form for Hai Phong Club.

Dinh Trieu was voted the best goalkeeper of the AFF Cup and Xuan Son was the top scorer of the AFF Cup with 7 goals. Other notable names are Tran Bao Toan (Ninh Binh FC), Le Van Do ( Hanoi Police), Nguyen Thanh Chung (Hanoi Club). Khong Minh Gia Bao will be called up to the Vietnam national team for the first time. Due to injury, Xuan Son was not registered by Nam Dinh Club to play in the first phase of V-League. He can only return to V-League from round 12, or if earlier, the National Cup front, where Nam Dinh faces Long An on November 23. However, the striker born in 1997 is still an important factor. Coach Kim Sang-sik called Xuan Son back to the Vietnam team to check his physical condition, ball feeling, adaptability and prospects for his return in the near future.

However, the Vietnamese team is still missing some players in this training session, such as Nguyen Van Toan, Doan Ngoc Tan, Vu Van Thanh... due to not recovering from injuries.

However, since they only faced a weaker opponent like Laos this month, coach Kim Sang-sik can be satisfied with his current squad. The Vietnamese team is capable of taking 3 points to continue chasing Malaysia.

After 4 matches, Malaysia leads with 12 points, while Vietnam is second with 9 points. Last night (November 3), the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) had its appeal rejected by FIFA, related to the illegal naturalized players used in the matches against Vietnam and Nepal in the 2027 Asian Cup qualifiers.

FAM will appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS). If they continue to lose, Malaysia will lose the 6 points they had in the matches against Vietnam and Nepal. This means Malaysia will fall to second place in the table with 6 points, while Vietnam will rise to the top with 12 points.

If this happens, the Vietnamese team only needs to avoid losing to Laos in the away match on November 18, and coach Kim Sang-sik and his team will win a ticket to the 2027 Asian Cup.

Some U.23 players go 'study abroad'

Unlike the October training session, when coach Kim Sang-sik called up 8 U.23 players including goalkeeper Trung Kien, defenders Hieu Minh, Phi Hoang, Nhat Minh, midfielders Xuan Bac, Van Khang, and strikers Thanh Nhan and Dinh Bac, the November training session was missing many young players.

The reason is because U.23 Vietnam will compete in the 2025 international friendly tournament in China, when they face U.23 Korea, U.23 Uzbekistan and U.23 China.

Coach Kim Sang-sik wants the young players to compete and gain experience to prepare for the 33rd SEA Games and the Asian U23 qualifiers, which will take place in December and January 2026. This is a more important task than the match against Laos, where Vietnam is likely to get 3 points.

However, the Vietnamese team is still very strong and competitive, enough for coach Kim Sang-sik to calculate many new tactical options.
