NTO - Efficiency of winter crop conversion

Implementing the crop conversion plan of the Provincial People's Committee, in the winter-spring crop of 2023-2024, localities in the province have promoted the conversion of dry crops that use less water. At present, farmers are focusing on harvesting with the joy of a good harvest.

In the 2023-2023 winter-spring crop, Phuoc Trung commune (Bac Ai) converted 50 hectares of ineffective rice land and hilly land to grow corn, beans, sesame, tobacco, sugarcane, etc. Thanks to the guaranteed irrigation water source for production, the crops grew quite well. Ms. Katơr Thị Điền in Đồng Đáy village shared: This crop, my family converted 5 sao of rice land to grow waxy corn. Corn production uses less water, the profit is higher than rice cultivation, currently the price of corn kernels is from 18,000-19,000 VND/kg, after deducting expenses, my family earned a profit of over 22 million VND. Sharing the joy, Ms. Chamaléa Thị Thêm in Ta Lú 1 village, Phước Đại commune, excitedly said: My family planted more than 3 sao of broad beans, thanks to favorable weather, the beans grew well, bore many fruits, and had a higher yield than last year, thereby helping the family have an additional source of income. The entire Bac Ai district has converted over 120 hectares of ineffective rice fields and hilly land without a proactive irrigation source to grow drought-resistant crops such as corn, watermelon, shallots, chili, beans, sesame, tobacco, sugarcane, etc.

With the characteristics of short growth, easy care and low water use, many farmers in Ninh Son, Ninh Phuoc, Ninh Hai, Thuan Bac districts... with low-yield rice growing areas and in hilly areas have also proactively switched to growing short-term crops such as: Chili, coriander, golden melon, watermelon, green beans, peanuts, shallots... with an area of over 600 hectares. Currently, people are focusing on harvesting crops with the joy of good prices. Ms. Le Thi Thu in My Hoa village, Vinh Hai commune (Ninh Hai), shared: My family's production land is located in the coastal sandy land specializing in growing purple onions, garlic, chili... Every year, after harvesting the main purple onion crop, my family rotates to grow hybrid sim chili. Currently, the family is entering the chili harvest season with prices ranging from 13,000-14,000 VND/kg, so chili growers are also excited, having a stable source of income to develop the family economy .

In the 2023-2024 winter-spring crop, the whole province converted more than 902 hectares of crops, reaching 133.8% of the plan; of which, 469.8 hectares were converted on rice land and 432.5 hectares of other land, including short-term and long-term crops. In the past time, thanks to the functional sector, localities flexibly arranged investment capital to build canal systems, regulate water reasonably, transfer science and technology, and introduce many new crop varieties into production; at the same time, calling on businesses to cooperate in production and supply materials, contributing to helping farmers feel secure in production and increase income. As a result, the production of upland crops brings income 1.5-2 times higher than that of rice cultivation.

Comrade Truong Khac Tri, Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, said: In order to produce effectively in hot weather conditions, the unit recommends that localities continue to promote crop conversion to help farmers have stable incomes in the coming summer-autumn crop. At the same time, coordinate with relevant units to effectively provide adequate irrigation water for people to produce. At the same time, it is recommended that people do not produce outside of the plan in areas with difficult water supply and far from water sources.
