Using environmental protection as a cover to undermine the country.

Việt NamViệt Nam24/06/2024

The environment and environmental pollution are global issues. All countries, regardless of their level of economic development, political system, or social structure, are facing environmental pollution. However, with a malicious and subversive view, hostile forces have spread distorted information, claiming that environmental pollution is unique to Vietnam, and falsely accusing Vietnam of arresting and imprisoning environmental activists.

On September 28, 2023, Ms. Hoang Thi Minh Hong, born in 1972, was sentenced to three years in prison by the Ho Chi Minh City People's Court for tax evasion. At the trial, the defendant, Hoang Thi Minh Hong, admitted her guilt and expressed deep remorse. Surprisingly, after her arrest, websites such as RFA and VOA Vietnamese continuously published articles falsely accusing Vietnam of suppressing environmental activists. Even more absurdly, they called on foreign organizations and countries to intervene and demand that Vietnam release Hoang Thi Minh Hong.

Regarding this incident, the spokesperson for the Vietnamese Ministry of Foreign Affairs , Ms. Pham Thu Hang, affirmed: “We completely reject the false information with malicious intent about Vietnam’s fight against crime as well as our foreign relations. These are all cases of violations of Vietnamese law and have been investigated, prosecuted, and tried in accordance with Vietnamese law.”

The environment is a global issue, and Vietnam, like many other countries, is making every effort to minimize environmental pollution. However, forces with malicious intentions against Vietnam are always looking for ways to dig up and exploit its shortcomings and weaknesses. Even a minor incident involving the discharge of waste into the environment or the construction of projects that pollute water sources is immediately attributed by these groups to the very nature of the political regime.

Many individuals are also calling for the formation of groups and organizing forums to exchange and discuss environmental issues in Vietnam, but in reality, their purpose is to incite unrest and undermine Vietnam. Major General Tran Kim Tuyen, former Director of the Anti-Reactionary Department of the Ministry of Public Security, stated: "Regarding these environmental protection forums, in my opinion, their purpose is not to protect the environment, but to exploit the pretext of environmental protection to carry out activities that disrupt security and public order."

Social media has become an effective tool for those opposing Vietnam to exaggerate environmental issues in the country, creating hotspots that attract public attention. In particular, under the direction of the reactionary organization Viet Tan, these individuals continuously spread news and images about environmental pollution activities in Vietnam. They fabricate, manipulate, and distort information to confuse, mislead, and erode public trust in the regime.

Recalling the environmental pollution incident in the Vung Ang Economic Zone caused by Formosa Company in 2016, hostile forces used the pretexts of democracy, human rights, and the environment to incite people to gather in large numbers for illegal marches, resist law enforcement, destroy property, and disrupt public order. In particular, Hoang Duc Binh repeatedly used Facebook to livestream with images and statements slandering law enforcement, inciting unrest, and distorting the truth. According to investigations by law enforcement, Hoang Duc Binh had participated in many reactionary groups, had connections with reactionary and anti-government elements in the area, and regularly posted and shared information and documents on his personal Facebook page that slandered the regime.

Associate Professor, Dr. Do Canh Thin, Deputy Director of the Institute of Non-Traditional Security, believes that behind the schemes of hostile forces, it's not simply about environmental issues, but about nurturing and carrying out a color revolution in Vietnam, aiming to overthrow the Vietnamese political regime. “We know that hostile and reactionary forces dislike our regime. No matter how much we achieve or how much social progress we make, these groups will never acknowledge it. Secondly, they exploit all events, exaggerating, manipulating, distorting, and inciting unrest, including environmental issues, turning small matters into big ones, aiming to create instability in Vietnam,” said Associate Professor, Dr. Do Canh Thin.

Vietnam is one of the countries most significantly affected by climate change and environmental impacts. Vietnam has also joined hands with the international community to make the earth greener. Many programs have been implemented, such as planting 1 billion trees and reducing the burning of coal and CO2 emissions. At the 26th United Nations Climate Change Conference in December 2021, the Vietnamese Prime Minister committed to achieving net emissions of "zero" by 2050 and to reducing global methane emissions by 2030, participating in the declaration on transitioning from coal-fired power to clean energy.

General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong also affirmed: “We need sustainable development, in harmony with nature, to ensure a healthy living environment for present and future generations, not to exploit and seize resources, consume material goods without limits, and destroy the environment.” Thus, Vietnam is always actively striving to ensure a cleaner and more friendly living environment. At the same time, it always creates the best conditions for collectives and individuals to participate in environmental protection activities. Any individuals or organizations that violate environmental regulations will be dealt with fairly, strictly, and appropriately.
