Tires are an important part, responsible for supporting the entire car body, in direct contact with the road surface. After a long period of use, car tires will inevitably crack, chip or tear.
Tire with cracked ply layer fails inspection
The Giao thong Newspaper hotline received a question from a reader: on the way home for Tet, due to going on a bumpy road with many sharp rocks, the rear tire cracked. After Tet holiday, the vehicle is due for inspection, will the cracked tire pass the inspection?
Cars with cracked tires that expose the tire cord are serious defects and will fail the tire inspection and vehicle registration (illustrative photo).
Regarding this issue, a representative of a vehicle inspection center said that according to the National Technical Regulation on automobiles, trailers, semi-trailers, and four-wheeled motorized cargo vehicles in technical safety and environmental protection inspection (QCVN 122:2024), cracked, broken, or blistered car tires that expose the tire layer are serious defects (MaD), so the car will fail the tire inspection, which means failing the vehicle inspection.
If the tire of your Giao thong reader has a crack at the above level, it will also fail the inspection. However, if the crack is light and the fiber layer is not exposed, it may be classified as a minor defect (MiD) and still pass the tire inspection. When all other categories are passed, the car will be issued a certificate and inspection stamp.
In addition, QCVN 122:2024 also stipulates that other damages and defects related to car tires, if encountered, will also fail the tire inspection.
Including: Incorrect number of tires, tire size as specified by the manufacturer, technical documents; Insecure installation, incomplete, damaged clamping and loose parts; Rim, brake ring cracked, warped; Tires on both sides of the guide wheel do not have the same tread pattern, using retreaded tires; Tires worn to the manufacturer's indicator mark.
For the mounting bracket and spare wheel, if the mounting bracket is cracked, broken, or not installed securely, the car will also fail the inspection. However, if the spare wheel is not complete according to the manufacturer's regulations, the car will still be inspected normally because it is a minor damage or defect.
If the crack on the tire surface is minor, it can be repaired by patching, but if it is severe, a new tire must be replaced to ensure safety (illustrative photo).
How to fix cracked tires?
An auto repair garage technician in Nam Tu Liem district ( Hanoi ) said that there are many reasons that lead to car tires being cracked, chipped or torn. The cause can be due to accidents or unexpected situations, sudden braking causing the tire to rub strongly against the road surface, causing the tire to be torn, chipped or cracked;
Due to tires being used for a long time, beyond the expiry date, the tire surface is degraded, worn, creating cracks and tears; Due to the vehicle going into terrain areas with many potholes, sharp rocks, the tire is scratched, worn, punctured, causing cracks and tears.
Another cause is due to incorrect tire pressure. Over-inflating the tire can lead to premature tire wear in the center of the tread; while under-inflating can lead to wear in the shoulder area. In the long run, car tires wear out quickly and are more susceptible to tearing, chipping, or cracking of the rubber surface.
In case of minor cracks in the tire surface, only cracks/chipping in the tread that do not greatly affect the tire quality, tire patching method can be used to fix it.
In case of severe cracks on the tire surface, or cracks on the tire sidewall (where the pressure is high when moving), the tire must be replaced immediately to ensure stable and safe operation of the vehicle. Otherwise, it may lead to tire explosion while moving, endangering the driver and other road users around.
