Arousing the potential and advantages of the locality, promoting propaganda, and gradually building typical agricultural products into OCOP products are among the solutions of Dong Hung district to increase value, build agricultural product brands, increase income for farmers, and contribute to building new rural areas in depth and sustainably.
Since the sapodilla achieved 3-star OCOP, Lo Giang people no longer have to worry about output because traders from all over come to the garden to buy.
Spread Strongly
In 2021, Minh Tan Commune Agricultural Service Cooperative brought local products to participate in the One Commune One Product program, becoming the first agricultural product of the district and one of the first two products of Dong Hung district to be recognized by the province as meeting 4-star OCOP standards.
Mr. Nguyen Ngoc Phuong, Director of the Cooperative, said: Since being certified as OCOP, the products have barcodes, labels, and are put on e-commerce platforms, the consumption market is better, and the price is also higher. This is the motivation for the Cooperative to promote households to boldly invest in production, continue to research and improve designs, improve quality, increase output 2-3 times, and provide the market with unique, strange, beautiful, and highly competitive products. The locality also supports people to borrow capital to invest in expanding production, support procedures for converting land for growing raw materials, and promote product consumption. One very special thing is that although it is still a purely agricultural commune, thanks to focusing on building key agricultural products such as lucky bamboo and peach trees, it has brought high economic efficiency, and agriculture has become a key sector, turning Minh Tan from a difficult commune into a commune with a developed economy in the district.
Sapodilla trees have been present in Lo Giang for decades, but few people know about them and enjoy them. However, since the commune took sapodilla fruits to participate in the OCOP program and was recognized as meeting 3-star standards, sapodilla growers have been excited, focusing on care, expanding the area, and improving the quality of sapodilla. Therefore, not only people in the whole province know about Lo Giang sapodilla, but traders from some neighboring provinces also know about them and come to the garden to buy them.
Mr. Nguyen Van Dang, Lo Giang commune said: We now only focus on breeding good varieties to expand the area, taking care of the sapodilla tree so that it bears fruit, big, sweet and cool, and no longer have to worry about consumption like before because traders come to the garden to buy. The number of people buying Lo Giang sapodilla through e-commerce sites and online sales channels is increasing day by day. Sapodilla used to be a famine-relief tree, but now it has become a tree that makes our people rich.
Not only does it increase value but it also helps change backward farming practices towards a market economy, so the OCOP program quickly receives support and enthusiastic participation from the subjects.
Mr. Pham Hoang Sy, Director of Dong Tan Commune High-Quality Rice Production and Trading Cooperative, said: The Cooperative has proactively registered to participate in the OCOP program, focusing on building a 70-hectare raw material area, rice is dried immediately after harvest, processed and packaged by modern production lines to produce high-quality rice products, meeting the criteria of 3-star OCOP products. In 2022, the Cooperative will purchase and sell over 300 tons of Giang village rice for people. The Cooperative's purchase price is nearly 10% higher than the market price. In particular, the Cooperative's Giang village rice products have been registered to be purchased in large quantities and for a long time by a number of businesses and stores. This shows that OCOP has helped build a brand for Giang village rice, towards building a Thai Binh rice brand.
Efforts to increase the value of agricultural products
If in the first year Dong Hung only had 3 key products of the localities achieving 4-star and 3-star OCOP, then in the second year the whole district had 14 products achieving 4-star and 3-star OCOP, bringing the total number of OCOP products to 17 products. Dong Hung, from the district with the fewest OCOP products in the province, has now risen to the top, including 6 agricultural products: Phat Loc of Minh Tan commune, Sapodilla of Lo Giang commune, Rice of Giang village, Dong Tan commune, Arrowroot powder, Turmeric starch of Dong La commune, Pumpkin of Dong Xa commune. OCOP products not only open up opportunities for local agricultural development but also help develop the rural economy in the direction of increasing the value of agricultural products.
Mr. Mai Duc Nhan, Director of Dong La Agricultural Products Processing and Trading Cooperative, said: Since the Cooperative started processing turmeric and cassava into starch, the value has increased many times. Both products of the Cooperative have just been recognized by the province as 4-star OCOP. This is a great opportunity for us to bring our products to other provinces, creating more jobs for local workers.
Production and processing comply with the process, high quality, Dong La's tapioca starch and turmeric starch products achieve 4-star OCOP.
As one of the units registering to build OCOP products in 2023, Ha Giang Golden Jackfruit Conservation and Development Cooperative is being consulted by specialized units to complete planting and breeding plans, improve jackfruit quality, product brand identity, support evaluation, and complete product profiles.
Mr. Bui Duy Thu, Director of the Cooperative, shared: By participating in the OCOP program, the Cooperative hopes that the local traditional jackfruit products will be proven in terms of quality and origin, and will be promoted more widely, creating advantages to increase value and competitiveness in the market. The Cooperative also hopes to be supported with machinery to process jackfruit into dried products when the raw material area reaches over 10 hectares.
In 2023, Dong Hung strives to have 8 products meeting OCOP standards of 3 stars or higher, most of which are agricultural products.
Mr. La Quy Thang, Head of the District Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, said: To achieve the above goals, the District People's Committee directed relevant departments, offices, and localities to actively propagate and raise awareness for people, businesses, and cooperatives. Organize a review of key products of all localities, on that basis and based on the standards to select products to participate in the OCOP program. Guide and support subjects with weak tasks to have more OCOP products. Localities continue to implement effective production linkage models associated with product consumption between farmers and cooperatives, businesses, and scientists. Along with that, improve the quality to 4 stars, 5 stars, contributing to implementing criterion No. 13 in building advanced new rural areas of localities.
