Barry Lam, chairman of Quanta Computer Inc., one of the world's largest manufacturers of laptops and other electronics, has been named Taiwan's richest man by Forbes magazine.
According to Forbes' real-time billionaires list, Mr. Lam's net worth was $9.3 billion as of 1 p.m. Friday, placing him at the top in Taiwan, and 226th worldwide.
After Mr. Lam, footwear tycoon Zhang Congyuan, who founded Huali Industrial in 2004 and now operates factories in China, Vietnam and the Dominican Republic, ranked second in Taiwan and 297th in the world, with a net worth of US$7.7 billion.
With a net worth of $7.4 billion, Hon Hai Precision Industry Co. founder Terry Gou is ranked third in Taiwan and 326th in the world. Next is Chang Chun Group co-founder Lin Shu-hong, who is ranked fourth in Taiwan and 347th in the world with a net worth of $7.2 billion. Fifth place goes to Want Want Group chairman Tsai Eng-meng, who is also ranked 430th in the world with a net worth of $6.3 billion.
Quanta's stock has soared as the artificial intelligence boom continues. Quanta's shares have surged 127% since the beginning of May, closing at NT$195.00 on Thursday (July 13).
Mr. Lam was born in Shanghai in 1949 and grew up in Hong Kong in a low-income family, receiving his bachelor's and master's degrees in electrical engineering from National Taiwan University.
In 1988, Mr. Lam and CCLeung, a friend from Hong Kong, founded Quanta with a capital contribution of NT$30 million.
Quanta's current capitalization is NT$38.63 billion, according to the Taiwan Stock Exchange.
