Preliminary vote counts show that Mr. Putin won this year's election and will lead Russia for the 2024-2030 term.
With 34.26% of the votes counted, Vladimir Putin has received 87.5% of the votes, a record high in modern Russian history, the Central Election Commission said on March 17. The next positions are Nikolay Kharitonov (4.03%), Vladislav Davankov (3.87%) and Leonid Slutsky (3.03%).
With this result, Mr. Putin will be elected for a fifth term and become the leader of Russia for the next 6 years. He was the president of Russia for the terms of 2000-2004, 2004-2008, 2012-2018, 2018-2024 and held the position of prime minister for the period of 2008-2012. Mr. Putin was elected in 2012 and 2018 with 63.6% and 76.69% of the votes, respectively.
"Congratulations to Vladimir Putin on his glorious victory in the Russian presidential election," Deputy Chairman of the Russian Security Council Dmitry Medvedev wrote on Telegram.
The Russian Public Opinion Research Center (VCIOM) earlier released a post-election quick poll that also showed Mr. Putin leading with 87% of the vote. The poll was conducted at 1,400 polling stations across Russia with more than 466,000 people, of whom 60.4% responded to the question.

The Russian presidential election took place on March 15-17 with more than 94,000 polling stations across the country, including four regions that Russia annexed in October 2022. In many regions, Mr. Putin received more than 90% support.
This is the first time Russia has held a presidential election over three days, instead of one day as before. Voter turnout this year was 74.22%, surpassing the record 67.54% in 2018, according to the Central Election Commission of Russia.
This year's election is highly regarded by Mr. Putin, as it is an opportunity for him to amplify his tough message to the West and demonstrate his strong position in Russian politics, according to observers.
