On May 30, US President Donald Trump announced that he would double the import tax on steel from other countries to 50%, when he spoke at a US Steel plant in Pennsylvania, according to AFP news agency.
"We will raise the tariff from 25% to 50% on steel imported into the United States. This will further protect our steel industry," Mr. Trump declared.
The US leader gave a speech to workers in the battleground state of Pennsylvania - which contributed to his victory in last year's presidential election.
The White House said the new tariffs will officially take effect next week.
Since returning to the White House in January, Mr. Trump has imposed high tariffs on both allies and rivals, shaking up the world trade order and roiling financial markets.
He also targeted specific sectors, including steel, aluminum and autos, with a 25% tariff. The 25% tariff on most steel and aluminum imported into the US went into effect in March. Trump had threatened to impose a 50% tariff on steel from Canada, but later backed off.
On May 30, Mr. Trump defended his trade policy, arguing that tariffs have helped protect American steel companies.
Mr. Trump also increased tariffs on imported aluminum to 50%
In a subsequent post on the social network Truth Social on May 30, President Trump said he would also increase import tariffs on aluminum to 50%.
He wrote: "I am deeply honored to raise the tariffs on steel and aluminum from 25% to 50%, effective June 4th. Our steel and aluminum industries are coming back stronger than ever. This will be another huge boost and great news for our great steel and aluminum workers. Let's make America great again!"
