OpenAI pauses voice that sounds like Scarlett Johansson

In a blog post, the leading artificial intelligence company said the "Sky" voice was created based on the natural voice of another professional actress and was not intended to mimic Johansson's voice.

"We believe that AI voices should not intentionally mimic the signature voices of celebrities. Sky's voice is not a carbon copy of Scarlett Johansson," OpenAI said.

On the X page, OpenAI added that it was looking to “pause” Sky as it needed to address confusion about who the voice resembled. OpenAI explained that it worked with professional voice actors to create the AI ​​voices named Breeze, Cove, Ember, Juniper, and Sky.

Sky made headlines last week when OpenAI released a higher-performing, more human-like version of the artificial intelligence technology that underpins ChatGPT, GPT-4o.

In the demo, Sky is much more human than previous versions and is even flirty at times, humorous, and able to seamlessly switch topics, unlike most chatbots out there.

These characteristics are said to have similarities with Johansson, who voices the main character in the movie "Her", a cautionary tale about the future where a man falls in love with an AI chatbot. In this movie, which will be released on Netflix in Vietnam, Scarlett Johansson does not show her face but only voices the AI ​​chatbot.

Not only that, on the day of the demo's launch, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman tweeted just one word on X: "Her."

OpenAI says it is working to address the confusion, just days after confirming the disbanding of a team within the company tasked with mitigating the long-term dangers of artificial intelligence. The “Superalignment” research group was disbanded a few weeks ago, with its members moving on to other projects and research.

OpenAI co-founder Ilya Sutskever and Superalignment team co-leader ^(*) Jan Leike announced their departures from the company last week.
