OpenAI and tech giants build 5 artificial intelligence data centers

On September 23, three major technology companies, OpenAI, Oracle and SoftBank, officially announced plans to build five new Artificial Intelligence (AI) data centers in the US, within the framework of the ambitious Stargate project with a total expected investment of up to 500 billion USD.

Project Stargate, a private-sector-led initiative, was launched in January 2025 after a meeting between US President Donald Trump and top tech executives as part of a strategy to make the US a global leader in AI infrastructure.

According to the announcement, OpenAI - the developer of ChatGPT - will cooperate with Oracle to build 3 new data centers in Shackelford County (Texas), Dona Ana County (New Mexico) and an undisclosed location in the Midwest region of the United States.

In addition, two other centers will be built in Lordstown, Ohio, and Milam County, Texas, by OpenAI, Japan's SoftBank Group, and a SoftBank-affiliated company.

These new data centers, along with Oracle and OpenAI’s existing expansion project in Abilene, Texas, and ongoing projects with CoreWeave, will bring Stargate’s total power capacity to nearly 7 gigawatts, representing more than $400 billion in investment over the next three years.

The ultimate goal of the Stargate project is to achieve a total capacity of 10 gigawatts for AI data center infrastructure. The new data center projects are expected to create about 25,000 direct local jobs.

In a statement released on September 23, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman emphasized: “Artificial intelligence can only reach its full potential if we build a powerful enough computing infrastructure to run it.”

The announcement comes just a day after Nvidia, the world's leading chip supplier for AI, announced it would invest up to $100 billion in OpenAI and provide data center chips for the company's projects.

OpenAI, along with its strategic partner Microsoft, is currently among the pioneering technology corporations pouring billions of dollars into developing AI data centers to serve services such as ChatGPT and Copilot./.
