Pakistan in turmoil over former Prime Minister Imran Khan

Người Lao ĐộngNgười Lao Động16/03/2023

Mr Khan was arrested by an Islamabad court last week after repeatedly failing to appear in court. He is accused of illegally selling state gifts he received during his time as prime minister (2018-2022).

According to a list shared by Pakistan's Information Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb last year, the gifts included seven expensive wristwatches, including one worth 85 million rupees (about $300,000).

Security forces surrounded Mr Khan’s residence in Zaman Park, Lahore, on March 14 but faced fierce opposition from his supporters. Police fired tear gas and water cannons to disperse the stone-throwing crowd.

Khan's Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party had asked a higher court to consider stopping the police from arresting the former prime minister. On March 15, the Lahore High Court ordered the police to stop the raid until 10 a.m. the next day. The police withdrew after the decision.

The allegations against Mr Khan began after he was ousted in a no-confidence vote in parliament early last year. The former prime minister staged nationwide protests demanding snap elections. He was shot during a parade.

Current Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has rejected Mr Khan's request, saying the election will be held as scheduled later this year.

In a statement late on March 14, Information Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb said the government had nothing to do with Khan’s arrest, which was a court decision. Aurangzeb also accused Imran Khan of breaking the law by defying the court order and creating unrest instead of cooperating.
