Star Trek Beyond is the most recent "Trek universe" film, released in 2016, starring Chris Pine as Captain Kirk (his first role in Star Trek in 2009) and actors Zachary Quinto, Simon Pegg, Karl Urban, Zoe Saldaña, John Cho… Paramount Pictures is developing a new Star Trek project with the above cast and is said to be the final chapter of the series.

In 2016, Paramount Pictures announced the production of Star Trek 4 , starring Chris Hemsworth (who played Kirk's father in the 2009 film) along with Chris Pine. However, that project did not come to fruition.

In February 2022, producer JJAbrams made a surprise announcement that a new Star Trek movie was in the works, starring Chris Pine, and would start filming later this year. This move surprised even the cast. Matt Shakman (who directed the series WandaVision ) was set to direct the movie, but left in August 2022 to take on the Fantastic Four for Marvel Studios.
