Important discovery when people aged 45 and over exercise 20 minutes a day

Medical experts have revealed that people between the ages of 45 and 65, if they exercise regularly, can prevent at least one dangerous disease later in life.

Exercise has long been known as the key to good health, disease prevention and longevity.

Now, new research has found another special benefit when older adults are physically active.

Exercise in midlife is a strategy to prevent Alzheimer's disease

Scientists from the Barcelona Institute for Global Health (Spain) followed 337 people aged 45 to 65, with a family history of Alzheimer's disease, over a period of 4 years.

Exercising 21 minutes a day helps delay the age of Alzheimer's onset

The results found that people who exercised about 2.5 hours a week (about 21 minutes a day) delayed the age of onset of Alzheimer's disease.

Specifically, middle-aged people between 45 and 65 years old who exercise regularly at the above level have a lower risk of having toxic beta-amyloid protein spread in the brain.

Amyloid forms plaques and tangles in the brain, which can impair nerve cell communication and cause dementia.

Interestingly, the team found that people who increased their physical activity had lower levels of amyloid, and increased exercise significantly reduced the threat of amyloid.

The authors said people who exercised were more likely to maintain volume in brain regions important for thinking and memory, while those who were inactive were more vulnerable to some regions having thicker cortex - an early sign of neurodegeneration.

Even people who exercised less than the recommended amount had reduced cortical thickness compared to sedentary people, suggesting that any amount of exercise, no matter how small, is beneficial for health, said study leader Dr. Müge Akıncı.

The risk of developing Alzheimer's disease by age 45 is 1 in 5 in women and 1 in 10 in men; about 1 in 9 at age 65 and older

According to the Alzheimer's Association, the risk of developing Alzheimer's disease by age 45 is 1 in 5 for women and 1 in 10 for men; it's about 1 in 9 for people 65 and older.

Research shows that incorporating a healthy lifestyle early on, focusing on brain health and reducing cardiovascular risk, can potentially slow the progression of the disease.

In fact, about 13% of cases may be due to lack of exercise, Science Daily reports.

These findings reinforce the importance of physical activity in midlife as a strategy for preventing Alzheimer's disease, added lead author Dr Eider Arenaza-Urquijo, an expert in the field.

Increasing physical activity could be key to reducing future disease rates. The study reinforces the World Health Organization's (WHO) recommendation of 150-300 minutes of moderate activity or 75-150 minutes of vigorous activity per week.
