Ben-Gurion University of the Negev (Israel) recently announced a breakthrough discovery about a special group of immune cells, which are believed to have the ability to slow down the biological aging process.
According to research published in the prestigious scientific journal Nature Aging , T helper cells play an important role in maintaining the balance of the immune system as people age. These cells appear to help clean up senescence cells that accumulate in the body over time, which cause inflammation and tissue damage.
When scientists reduced the number of helper T cells in mice, the animals aged faster and had shorter lifespans.
Previously, a Japanese study of supercentenarians - people living over 100 years old - also showed that their immune systems contained a lot of helper T cells.
Based on the latest findings and the aforementioned Japanese study, the Israeli team now believes that helper T cells may be one of the "keys" to maintaining an immune system that is appropriate to a person's life stage, rather than a younger or overactive immune system.
The team further explains that tracking changes in helper T cells from a young age could reveal how quickly a person is aging and allow early steps to maintain their health in old age.
The phenomenon of biological age and chronological age can differ by decades.
Scientists say the breakthrough discovery could open up new directions in diagnosing and treating age-related diseases, helping to increase life expectancy.
