Rare movement discovered inside the Earth

Researchers believe this rare shift inside the Earth may be due to some rocks near the core-mantle boundary changing structure, becoming denser.

A rare geological discovery has just been announced when scientists identified a shift deep inside the Earth, at the boundary between the core and the mantle that surrounds the core.

The discovery comes from analysis of satellite data, which showed a puzzling change in the planet's gravitational field between 2006 and 2008.

Researchers believe that this shift may be due to some rocks near the core-mantle boundary changing structure, becoming denser.

One hypothesis is that the mineral perovskite, which lies at the base of the mantle, was transformed under extreme pressure. This transformation could have set off a series of displacements that deformed the core-mantle boundary by about 10cm. This could also explain the magnetic anomalies recorded in the same area in 2007.

The discovery was made possible by data from the Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE) satellite pair, a joint US-German project. The two satellites flew in pairs from 2002 to 2017, measuring changes in their distance, which helped detect fluctuations in Earth's gravitational field.

Although GRACE is typically used to track the movement of water and ice, the satellite's data recorded an unusual signal that peaked in 2007 off the Atlantic coast of Africa.

This signal could not be explained by changes on the Earth's surface, leading to the hypothesis of a deep internal displacement.

These findings, published in the journal Geophysical Research Letters, could help scientists better understand the connections between the Earth's layers, which directly influence phenomena such as earthquakes and the planet's magnetic field./.
