In a study published in the medical journal The Lancet , Spanish scientists tested the benefits of walnuts on 771 teenagers aged 11 to 16. They were all students from 12 high schools in Spain, according to the health website Healthline (USA).
Walnuts may help boost teens' reasoning and concentration skills
Of these, about 50% of the students were asked to eat 30 grams of raw walnuts every day for 6 months. The remaining 50% of the students did not eat walnuts and were not instructed to follow any nutritional regimen.
Research results show that students who ate walnuts every day for 6 months had an increased ability to pay attention, reason, and process complex information.
This evidence also suggests that eating a handful of walnuts a few times a week may help adolescents improve their brain health and cognitive function, said study lead author Dr. Jordi Julvez.
This benefit of walnuts is due to the content of omega-3 alpha-linolenic acid (ALA). This is an omega-3 fatty acid found in flaxseed, soybeans, canola oil, and some fruits. Many research evidences show that omega-3 fatty acids have the effect of enhancing memory, learning ability, cognitive health, blood circulation and fighting neurodegeneration, according to Healthline .
