The urban lighting system in Son La city was previously invested by the State budget, and is now managed by the People's Committees of the wards: To Hieu, Chieng An, Chieng Coi, Chieng Sinh, including 90 streets and some residential areas, with a total length of over 150 km with nearly 4,700 sets of lights of all kinds. The Lighting Enterprise, Son La Urban Environment and Services Joint Stock Company is the unit assigned to manage and operate the urban lighting system.
Mr. Nguyen Ngoc Phuong, Director of the Lighting Enterprise, informed: In 2018, from experience, learning, and researching solutions to save electricity for urban lighting, the unit proposed a solution to replace HPS bulbs with LED lights. In 2019, the enterprise piloted replacing 43 sets of 250W HPS bulbs with 250W LED lights on Truong Chinh Street. Along with that is a system of cabinets controlling the above light bulbs using advanced smart technology via wireless signals for each light and light cluster on the streets. Comparison results after 1 month of implementation, before using 43 HPS bulbs with 250W bulbs, the power consumption was 2,225 Kw/month, now using 43 LED lights with 250W power consumption is reduced to only 1,068 Kw/month, thanks to which, the power consumption is reduced to 1,157 Kw/month.

With the advantages of LED bulbs, in the period from 2019 to 2024, the City People's Committee has invested in replacing and installing thousands of new LED bulbs with different capacities on inner-city roads and central traffic routes; along with that, people in residential areas contributed to installing LED bulbs. In particular, from April 2025, the People's Committee of Son La City has implemented the Project to renovate and upgrade the lighting system in the City. Accordingly, upgrading and renovating the existing lighting system and adding new lighting systems on 17 roads with a total cost of more than 10.7 billion VND. Construction units will replace and install more than 800 SON lighting sets with a capacity of 250w to 400w with 250w LED lights; Install lighting control cabinets, lampshades... Collect 503 lighting sets and some lampshades to install and replace burnt out or damaged bulbs on roads and alleys in residential areas. Currently, the project has completed about 90% of the project volume; bringing the total number of LED bulbs in the wards to about 70% of the total number of bulbs.
Mr. Cam Viet Quan, Chairman of To Hieu Ward People's Committee, shared: The solution of replacing HPS bulbs with LED lights, installing automatic urban lighting and decoration control cabinets will save about 50% of electricity consumption compared to traditional lighting systems; reducing CO2 emissions and other greenhouse gases into the environment.

Using LED lights for more uniform lighting, no dark spots and flexible light intensity, automatically adjusting to traffic density and environmental conditions, the smart lighting system helps traffic participants easily observe, reducing the risk of accidents, especially at night when the weather is bad. This system creates a safer and more comfortable environment for urban residents; at the same time, the smart lighting system automates the control and monitoring process, reducing the number of operating workers. LED lights have a long life, so they rarely need to be replaced, helping to reduce maintenance costs. The ability to update and upgrade remotely also saves time and costs.
Born and raised in Chieng Sinh ward, currently living and working in Ho Chi Minh City, Ms. Luong Khanh Ly shared: It has been 5 years since I had the opportunity to return to Son La, and I see that my hometown has changed a lot. Especially at night, the roads from Chieng Sinh, Chieng An, To Hieu, and Chieng Coi wards are sparkling with electric lights, ensuring light for traffic participants and facilitating people's recreational activities. Notably, the decorative lights and shapes along both sides of the streets in the Northwest Square area also make the scenery of Son La mountain town more and more beautiful.

To ensure the safe and economical operation of the lighting system, every day, the officers and workers of the Lighting Enterprise always comply with the regulations on electrical safety, and perform the daily power on and off on time. Regularly check and promptly fix problems, pay attention to industrial cleaning of electrical cabinets to ensure safe operation; create a civilized, modern and unique urban appearance.
