Developing safe vegetables not only helps people in the highlands of Mu Cang Chai increase the economic value of ineffective fields and gardens, but also opens up new directions for economic development, bringing high economic efficiency to people. Typically, strawberry growing models are bringing positive signals, promising to become a new crop with advantages in agricultural production in the highlands.
Mr. Ly A Vang - Group 3, Mu Cang Chai town shared: "This winter-spring crop, I tried planting more than 1,000 strawberry plants. With simple care, after 4 months, the strawberries have produced a lot of fruit, sweet taste, easy to sell, the average retail price is from 100,000 - 120,000 VND/kg but still not enough for customers to buy. After deducting expenses, my family has a profit of tens of millions of VND. The advantage of the cool and suitable climate here is that the strawberry plants grow well, giving a good yield and quality. I see that strawberry plants have a lot of potential for people to replace traditional crops such as corn, rice, potatoes, and cassava."
Like Mr. Vang, Mr. Giang A So in Hang Gang village, Lao Chai commune excitedly said: "After many times of consulting and researching the characteristics and growing environment of strawberries, at the end of 2024, I boldly bought more than 3,000 strawberry plants to plant on a rice field area of about 3,000m2. After harvesting, my family had an income of over 35 million VND. Meanwhile, with the same rice field area, previously growing rice or corn only earned about 10 million VND, not including material costs and labor. Through that, it has given me more motivation to learn strawberry planting and care techniques to continue planting and developing in the future."
Along with strawberries, in the district there are many other vegetable and mushroom growing models that bring efficiency and practical economic value such as: a model of more than 30 hectares, installing an automatic irrigation system to grow chayote, pumpkin, vegetables, cabbage, onions, tomatoes, sweet corn, cucumbers, harvesting about 10 tons of various products/day and creating continuous jobs for 50 workers all year round of Mr. Pham Quang Tho in Thai village, Khao Mang commune; a model of growing edible mushrooms, medicinal mushrooms and growing vegetables, cucumbers, stone sprouts, tomatoes... on an area of more than 6 hectares of Mu Cang Chai Edible Mushroom and Medicinal Mushroom Production Company Limited, directed by Mr. Nguyen Hoang Anh, each year harvesting over 30 tons of various mushrooms and a large number of other vegetables, creating jobs for over 60 local workers.
Or some agricultural cooperative models that are promoting efficiency such as: Mu Cang Chai Construction and General Agricultural Services Cooperative with a scale of 0.7 hectares; Mu Cang Chai Organic Agriculture Cooperative with more than 2 hectares of organic vegetable production; T&D Clean Agriculture Cooperative with more than 12 hectares; tomato growing model of more than 2 hectares invested with irrigation system, net house of Mr. Nguyen Van Mui in La Khat village, Nam Khat commune...
Mr. Nguyen Van Mui shared: "The Beep tomato variety is very suitable for the climate and soil of Mu Cang Chai district in general and Nam Khat commune in particular. Therefore, tomatoes grown here do not require too much technical care, just need to pay attention to fertilizing when the plants start to flower and bear fruit to give good yield and quality."
Thanks to boldly investing in greenhouses and a clean water irrigation system from the mountain stream, applying the tomato production process according to VietGAP standards, using only biological and organic fertilizers and pesticides, having a diary, strictly monitoring the development process and implementing quarantine to ensure the time before harvesting... Mr. Mui's family's tomato garden has good productivity, good fruit quality, limited pests and diseases, evenly ripened fruit, harvested from the root to the top, the harvest time lasts for more than 3 months, bringing a significant source of income to the family, solving jobs for many local workers.
From the fact that vegetables are essential products directly related to the daily life of the people, Mu Cang Chai district has focused on orienting people to increase the application of science and technology, develop and expand the area towards clean, safe and high-quality production, ensuring that in addition to serving local needs well, not only supplying the domestic market but also aiming to expand to foreign markets in the coming time. Thereby, gradually building prestige, opening a sustainable direction for short-term crops of the district.
