Philippine authorities ordered all boats to return to shore and residents in coastal communities to leave their homes today as super typhoon Man-yi approached the country with forecasts to strengthen before making landfall.

About 255,000 people have been evacuated ahead of super typhoon Man-yi, which is expected to make landfall tonight (November 16) or early tomorrow morning, becoming the sixth major storm to hit the country in the past month.

With wind gusts of up to 230 km/h, Man-yi is on track to enter Catanduanes province as a super typhoon, threatening 23 provinces and Metro Manila. The Philippine National Police and the Bureau of Fire Protection have been mobilized to assist in evacuation efforts.

The meteorological agency also warned of rising sea levels with serious risks. Many domestic flights have been cancelled. Residents are advised to be vigilant as the storm is expected to bring heavy rainfall and cause dam levels to rise, posing further risks to downstream communities.

At least 163 people have died in five typhoons that have hit the Philippines in recent weeks, leaving thousands homeless and destroying crops and livestock.

Scientists warn that climate change is increasing the intensity of storms, leading to heavier rains, flash floods and stronger winds.

About 20 major storms and tropical storms hit the Southeast Asian nation or its surrounding waters each year, causing widespread damage, but it is rare for storms to occur so simultaneously and in such close succession in such a short period of time.
