Perhaps because of its unique flavor and popularity across national borders, Vietnamese beef noodle soup was voted by CNN's travel page in the list of 20 dishes with the most delicious broth in the world .
In an article on January 8 about the world's 20 best soups for 2024, CNN quoted Andrea Nguyen, author of The Pho Cookbook: "Pho is one of the most well-known Vietnamese dishes in the world."
Talking about pho, CNN commented: "The broth is simmered for hours with cinnamon, star anise and other warming spices to create the wonderful aroma of this dish."
In Vietnam, diners can easily enjoy pho anywhere, whether it is a street stall, a local market or a luxury restaurant, a 5-star hotel with many versions of beef pho, chicken pho, many different flavors but beef pho is still the most favorite original pho.
It can be well-done beef pho, rare beef pho, or rare beef pho. No matter the version, a steaming bowl of beef pho with its distinctive flavor is always appealing, especially in the winter weather.
Under the photo of a bowl of beef pho illustrated in the article, CNN captioned: “A bowl of beef pho will surely cure all your ills.”
In 2022, CNN voted pho among the 50 best street foods in Asia.
Most recently, the list of the 100 best dishes in the world in 2023 voted by the world-famous culinary site TasteAtlas also named Vietnamese beef pho.
CNN's list of the 20 best soups/dishes with broth in the world is a suggestion for culinary enthusiasts to enjoy on their upcoming trips .
The list was ranked by CNN according to the local popularity of the dish, its unique delicious flavor and its health benefits.
CNN quoted Janet Clarkson, author of the book "Soup: A Global History", saying that soup is one of the oldest and most popular dishes in the world.
“Every culture has some form of soup,” Clarkson writes. “Soups are very ancient.” In the book, she writes that the first peoples boiled soup in everything from turtle shells to long bamboo tubes, and they created metal soup pots as early as the Bronze Age.
According to Clarkson, “every time you cook up a hearty pot of soup (perhaps with a hunk of bread) for a friend with a runny nose, you are, in fact, continuing a long-standing tradition.”
“Separating food and medicine — that's not how ancient people thought about it….I think in every country in the world, historically, some soups were considered to have a restorative effect,” she says.
