To gradually increase income and improve life, Mr. Trieu To Pu in Khe Mang village has used the entire hilly land area to develop forest economy . Accordingly, he has encouraged his wife and children to actively grow cinnamon. In the early years, when the cinnamon was still small, to increase income, Mr. Pu intercropped cassava and corn according to the motto "take short-term to support long-term".
Thanks to that, Mr. Pu's family now has over 15 hectares of cinnamon trees ranging in age from 3 to over 30 years old, with an average income of over 200 million VND/year. Thanks to growing cinnamon, Mr. Pu's family has the conditions to build a spacious house and buy expensive modern amenities.
Mr. Trieu To Pu shared: "Following the tradition of my ancestors, before I got married, I started growing cinnamon. To improve the economic efficiency of the hilly land, ensure sustainable farming, wherever I farmed, I intercropped cinnamon with cassava and corn. After finishing my family's land, when I saw that the villagers wanted to sell the hills, I bought them to grow cinnamon. Thanks to that, cinnamon has helped my family's economy prosper, giving me the conditions to raise my children and improve the quality of life."
Like Mr. Pu's household, the villages of Khe Mang, Thuong Son, Lang Chang, and Lang Than have hundreds of households with good economic conditions and are rich thanks to effectively exploiting the strengths of hilly land to grow cinnamon.
Mr. Ngo Van Truong, Lang Chang village shared: "As a local, I understand better than anyone the strengths here. Therefore, in addition to intensive farming to ensure food for the family as well as developing livestock, my wife and I focus on growing cinnamon in the remaining time. Over the past 10 years, the price of cinnamon on the market has increased, my family has not only escaped poverty but also become well-off."
With the participation of the entire political system, the work of developing and managing, protecting forests, preventing and fighting forest fires in the area has also been strengthened. Thanks to that, Phong Du Thuong maintains a total forest area of over 13,000 hectares; of which, special-use natural forests are nearly 2,500 hectares. At the same time, the commune has done a good job of contracting the protection of nearly 7,800 hectares of natural forests, developing economic planted forests with 4,490 hectares, mainly cinnamon with over 2,800 hectares, annually exploiting from 180 to 200 hectares, with cinnamon bark output reaching over 600 tons, collecting over 2,400 tons of branches, leaves and thousands of cubic meters of cinnamon wood, bringing in over 20 billion VND in revenue for the people.
Mr. Luong Van Thu - Chairman of Phong Du Thuong Commune People's Committee said: "The main economic sector of the locality is based on agricultural and forestry production, of which cinnamon trees are the main ones. In addition, the locality has a large area of natural forests, so the work of forest management, protection, forest fire prevention and fighting in the dry season is always focused on by the locality and the people are well implemented. At the same time, the people also take full advantage of the potential and strengths of hilly land and local labor resources to actively plant, care for and develop cinnamon trees, ensuring the maintenance of the existing area and forest cover of the locality".
Promoting the strengths of the hill and forest economy has made an important contribution to helping people gradually improve their material and spiritual lives. By the end of 2024, the commune's poor households will decrease to 90 households, accounting for 6.35%; near-poor households will decrease to 22 households, accounting for 1.55%; well-off and rich households will increase rapidly, helping the commune reach the goal of building a new countryside.
