Myanmar's military government is facing its biggest test since taking over the country in a 2021 coup after three ethnic minority forces launched a coordinated attack in late October, seizing several towns and military posts.

The offensive, dubbed “Operation 1027” by the rebels, initially penetrated into army-controlled areas on the border with China in Shan state, where the junta has lost control of several towns and more than 100 security outposts.

“We are continuing attacks in northern Shan state,” said Kyaw Naing, a spokesman for the Myanmar National Democratic League Army, one side of the campaign.

Fighting also erupted on two new fronts this week, in the western states of Rakhine and Chin, sending thousands fleeing to Mizoram state.

Following the militant attacks, 43 Myanmar soldiers crossed into India and were arrested by Indian security forces in Mizoram, police official Lalmalsawma Hnamte said.

About 39 soldiers were taken by Indian forces to the border crossing in the neighboring state of Manipur and handed over to Myanmar authorities, a federal security official said on condition of anonymity.
