Tourism industry will grow

The merger of Da Nang and Quang Nam, from the perspective of the culture and tourism industry, is most clearly shown. Located on the Central Heritage Road, tourism is the spearhead economic sector of the two localities.

For a long time, Da Nang City and Quang Nam Province have developed tourism in a mutually supportive and complementary manner. About 90% of tourists coming to Da Nang visit Quang Nam and vice versa. The close coordination between the two localities aims to create new tourism products with their own characteristics, limiting direct competition.

Da Nang has strengths in event tourism and high-end resort tourism. Quang Nam has strengths in cultural tourism and eco-tourism. International events held in Da Nang and Quang Nam have shown success in cooperation and tourism development, including a thriving cultural industry.

According to Mr. Nguyen Tien Quang - Director of the Vietnam Chamber of Commerce and Industry - Da Nang Branch, after the merger, Da Nang will be a megacity with a leading role for the economic region in the chain of coastal cities in the Central region. This can be identified through the comparative advantages, economic scale, and inherent potential of this new city.

According to Mr. Nguyen Thanh Hong - Director of the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Quang Nam province, the two localities will merge, the tourism industry will grow stronger. The new Da Nang will focus on building new products. Green tourism, eco-tourism, community tourism and cultural tourism will be the new products.

In addition to the two world cultural heritages, the merged Da Nang City has more than half a million hectares of primary forest – the largest forest area in the country. The new Da Nang City also has Song Thanh National Park, elephant and saola conservation areas, Son Tra, and Cu Lao Cham Biosphere Reserve. These will be invaluable resources for tourism exploitation.

Currently, Quang Nam and Da Nang welcome about 12 million tourists, bringing in social income of more than 40 trillion VND. After merging the two localities, the number of tourists may decrease but direct and indirect income will increase.

Abundant room for development

After the merger, Da Nang City will have the largest area among the 6 centrally-run cities. Da Nang will have 2 airports, 2 first-class seaports and a fairly synchronous transportation system, connecting seamlessly along the North-South and East-West axes. The total volume of goods through Tien Sa port and Chu Lai port can reach 20 million tons/year.

After the merger, logistics is considered a key industry, creating a new growth driver after tourism. In the South, Chu Lai Open Economic Zone has positioned its brand and economic leadership role with its strengths in manufacturing key products such as automobiles, supporting industries and precision mechanics.

In the center, Da Nang has a high-tech park specializing in the production of electronic components, software, and artificial intelligence. These fields affirm Da Nang's position as an important link, participating more deeply in the global supply chain.

Mr. Tran Nam Hung - Vice Chairman of Quang Nam Provincial People's Committee emphasized that the merger of Da Nang and Quang Nam is not only advantageous in terms of culture - economy but also in terms of national defense and security.

After the merger, Da Nang will have space and potential for strong development, increasing regional competitiveness. In particular, the logistics industry is considered a strength connecting Lien Chieu and Chu Lai seaports to the Mekong sub-region countries via the East-West Economic Corridor 2.

The model of a free trade zone and international financial center with special mechanisms will create a new breakthrough for Da Nang, not only in the Central region but also spreading throughout the country.

After nearly 30 years of development, Da Nang City has created a solid foundation in infrastructure, positioning itself as a dynamic, modern city and the leading economic, cultural and tourism center of the country. It can be said that merging Quang Nam into Da Nang is like adding more resources to further extend the development of this coastal city.

More than 3 million people in Quang Nam and Da Nang are looking forward to a new phase of development for the city facing the sea, leaning against Truong Son. The remaining issue is how to promote advantages and exploit existing resources to bring Da Nang to new heights, which depends on many factors, the most important of which is still the human factor.
