On the morning of May 26, Mr. Nguyen Xuan Anh - Director of the Earthquake Information and Tsunami Warning Center (Institute of Earth Sciences) - said that on the morning of May 25 and 26, 13 consecutive earthquakes occurred in Kon Tum and Quang Nam.

According to Mr. Xuan Anh, from 0:00 to 4:35 am on May 26, in Nam Tra My district ( Quang Nam ), 4 consecutive earthquakes occurred with magnitudes from 2.5 to 3 (magnitude M). In Kon Plong district (Kon Tum), an earthquake of magnitude 3.4 occurred.

These 5 earthquakes all had a focal depth of about 8.1 km. Disaster risk level 0 (no disaster risk).

On May 25, in Nam Tra My and Kon Plong districts, 8 earthquakes occurred with magnitudes ranging from 2.5 to 4.2.

Of which, a 4.2 magnitude earthquake occurred at 11:57 in Kon Plong district.

These earthquakes were all assessed as not posing a natural disaster risk (level 0).

Currently, the Earthquake Information and Tsunami Warning Center - Institute of Earth Sciences is continuing to monitor the above earthquake.

In Vietnam, earthquakes of magnitude 2 - 2.9 and 3 - 3.9 are considered weak earthquakes.

When an earthquake of 2 - 2.9 magnitude occurs, some people feel very light vibrations, causing no damage to buildings.

When an earthquake of magnitude 3 - 3.9 occurs, some people will feel it, but it rarely causes damage and objects in the house may be noticed shaking.

Earthquakes with a magnitude of 4 - 4.9 are considered weak earthquakes. When an earthquake occurs, objects in the house vibrate and make noise. Many people feel the earthquake. People outside the house feel a slight vibration but cause no damage or slight damage.

From April 2021 to now, hundreds of earthquakes have occurred in Kon Tum, concentrated in Kon Plong district, in which the earthquakes caused widespread tremors.

The largest earthquake occurred at noon on July 28, 2024 with a magnitude of 5.0, before that on August 23, 2022, there was a magnitude 4.7 earthquake.

According to Mr. Xuan Anh, "triggered earthquakes" are the cause of earthquakes in recent years in Kon Tum province.

"According to preliminary studies, earthquakes in Kon Tum are forecast to continue in the coming time but are unlikely to be greater than 5.5 magnitude. However, more detailed studies are still needed to assess earthquake activity in this area," said Mr. Xuan Anh.
