The People's Committee of Quang Ngai province has just approved the plan to select contractors for the project to restore the Son My National Monument, including 12 bid packages, with a total value of more than 26 billion VND.

The project to restore the Son My National Monument will be implemented from the second quarter of 2025 to the fourth quarter of 2026.

The restoration of the Memorial Site aims to renovate and restore the relic, creating a green, clean and beautiful space for people and tourists to offer incense and commemorate the 504 Son My civilians killed during the war.

At the same time, it meets the needs of preserving and storing artifacts, promoting historical and cultural values and serving the needs of sightseeing, scientific research, learning, teaching, and disseminating knowledge about history and culture to domestic and international visitors, contributing to the development of local tourism.

On March 16, 1968 (February 17, Mau Than year), in My Lai village, Son My commune, Son Tinh district, Quang Ngai province (now Tinh Khe commune, Quang Ngai city), US Army units massacred a large number of innocent people, taking the lives of 504 Son My civilians, most of whom were elderly people, women and children.

The massacre shocked world public opinion about the crimes that the US army committed against the Vietnamese people, creating a wave of protests against the war of aggression against Vietnam in the US and around the world.

From 1977-1978, the Son My relic site was built. This is the only massacre site in Vietnam that still retains important photos that realistically depict the inhumane and extremely barbaric massacres committed by the US military during the Vietnam War.

More than half a century has passed, but every time the Son My massacre is mentioned, the pain and loss still cannot be forgotten in the minds of the people of Son My and millions of Vietnamese people and peace-loving people around the world.

However, the people of Son My and the government of Quang Ngai province have closed the past to look towards a bright future, turning pain into motivation, together building the homeland and country, promoting friendship, for peace and progress of humanity.

Son My Memorial Site, located in Tinh Khe commune, 13km northeast of Quang Ngai city center, has become a red address for people from all walks of life and tourists from all over to burn incense and commemorate the innocent victims. It has also become a destination for peace.

This place currently preserves nearly 670 images, artifacts, and documents related to the massacre, of which 274 artifacts are available to visitors at the Exhibition House of the Relic Site.

Son My Relic Site was recognized as a National Monument by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism in 1979.

Every year, the Son My Memorial Site welcomes about 50,000 visitors to learn about the Son My massacre, including about 7,000 foreign visitors from countries such as the UK, US, Germany, and Spain./.
