Quang Ninh handles nearly 20,000m of wild bird trapping net

During the campaigns, Quang Ninh authorities destroyed nearly 20,000 meters of nets and hundreds of bamboo stakes and devices used to lure and hunt wild birds.

Quang Ninh is implementing a series of synchronous measures to prevent the hunting and extermination of wild birds, especially during the peak of the migratory bird season. Forest rangers, police, border guards and local authorities have launched many large-scale campaigns, focusing on areas where violations frequently occur, with the goal of thoroughly handling them and preventing recurrence.

In fact, in coastal areas, rice fields and mangrove swamps, the acts of setting nets, setting traps and using loudspeakers to lure fish still occur at a complex level, in some places with an organized nature. Violations discovered in recent inspections show that the amount of trapping tools used is very large, proving that this activity shows no signs of decreasing if regular inspections are not maintained.

Mr. Nguyen Dinh Nam, Deputy Head of Forest Protection Department Area 2, said that the unit has deployed 13 campaigns in Thong Nhat commune, Hoanh Bo ward and Tuan Chau ward. Thereby, the functional forces have dismantled and destroyed 8,900m of nets, along with 595 bamboo and wooden stakes of various types.

These are areas identified as having concentrated areas for setting nets and setting up nets to trap migratory birds in recent times. Timely intervention, urgent and synchronous handling have helped prevent large-scale trapping, recovered many exhibits and tools, and limited the possibility of re-offending.

According to statistics from the Department of Agriculture and Environment, up to now, inspection forces in the province have collected and destroyed a total of 16,920 meters of wire and nets of all kinds; 294 bamboo and wooden stakes; 64 foam storks; 50 meters of electric wire; and lure devices such as amplifiers, speakers and USBs containing sounds that attract birds.

Along with dismantling trapping tools, the forces also deployed instructions, reminders and required people to commit not to re-offend. In many localities, local authorities coordinated with forest rangers to organize propaganda right in residential areas, clearly explaining the harmful effects of hunting wild birds on the ecosystem. At the same time, disseminate legal regulations so that people understand and comply. This approach has helped raise awareness, creating clear changes in many key areas.

However, according to specialized units, there are still certain difficulties in the inspection process. Some people are not fully aware of the ecological balance role of wild birds and the need to protect wild birds. Some subjects take advantage of the wide terrain, the alluvial area far from residential areas to spread nets at night, causing a lot of pressure on monitoring and handling. When detecting the functional forces, many subjects quickly clean up or leave behind tools, making it difficult to identify and handle according to regulations.

Based on the results achieved and the difficulties in handling, Quang Ninh continues to aim to further tighten inspection measures, enhance inter-sectoral coordination, and enhance the supervisory role of local authorities and the community.

Authorities have affirmed that strict handling is a prerequisite to ending the practice of hunting and killing. When inspections are maintained continuously, combined with extensive propaganda and strong enough sanctions, the situation of trapping and catching wild birds in the area can be hoped to be controlled sustainably.
