Launching a book series to improve students' English listening and speaking skills

The book set includes 24 books, 2 books for each grade (from grade 1 to grade 12) written by authors who are famous lecturers, educators, and experienced general education teachers in the English department of Ho Chi Minh City University of Education, and the Department of Education and Training of Ho Chi Minh City.

The book series was made by the above mentioned strong team in a year and a half. Each class will have 2 volumes.

Mr. Nguyen Tien Cong - Director of Ho Chi Minh City University of Education Publishing House - said that the book is systematically designed from grade 1 to grade 12 according to the 2018 general education program. The book's topics are familiar and suitable for the goals and output standards of the 2018 general education program for each class.

"The goal of the 2018 general education program is to train a generation of global citizens who can live and work in any country. The book series focuses on developing listening and speaking skills for students," said Mr. Nguyen Tien Cong.

According to Mr. Cong, this is the first set of English teaching books published by Ho Chi Minh City University of Education Publishing House according to the 2018 general education program. "We do this with the desire to bring a useful document in implementing English learning with foreigners for educational institutions across the country," Mr. Cong informed.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Tu - Principal of Ho Chi Minh City University of Education Practice High School - said that the book series was tested by the school during the project implementation and after a year of testing before publishing, there were conclusions and adjustments. Currently, 10th and 11th grade students of the school are using the book series.

According to Ms. Tu, in the past there were many problems related to foreigners teaching English and without standard documents, centers providing foreign teachers often used teaching materials that lacked objectives and did not follow the program. Therefore, after evaluating this set of books, the school trained both Vietnamese and foreign English teachers to use the books to enhance English teaching for students.

"The book series is suitable for the enhanced English program according to the 2018 general education program to enhance listening and speaking skills for communication. The book series is also suitable for students studying abroad who want to supplement their listening and speaking skills and all students in the context of global citizens and aiming to make English their second language," Ms. Nguyen Thi Tu assessed.

Use the English enhancement textbook series for all three grades

The University of Education Practice High School is currently using the Global Gateway book series to teach English to 10th and 11th graders. It is expected that next school year it will teach it to 12th graders because the school is implementing a progressive international integration program.
