Throughout schools in Hue, teachers, students, union members and local residents are seen rolling up their sleeves to clean classrooms, wipe desks and hang out books. All are working towards a common goal of soon having the school bell ring again.
Early in the morning of October 31, the yard of Chu Van An Secondary School (Xuan Phu Ward, Hue City) was still submerged in a thick layer of mud after the historic flood. Dozens of soldiers from the Hue City Military Command and teachers joined hands to clean up to welcome students back to class soon.
"The school is located in a low-lying area, so the floodwaters are slowly receding. Even if we mobilize all our forces, it will take 2-3 days to hopefully complete the work. Many teachers who were on duty during the flood have fallen ill, so we are calling on more parents and support forces to join hands," said principal Le Thi Hong Giang.
According to initial statistics, the damage to the tables and chairs had been soaked for a long time and it was not possible to count the damage. The loudspeakers that were broadcast earlier this week, although placed high, were still flooded and severely damaged.
At Ly Thuong Kiet Primary School (Thuan Hoa Ward), the water had just receded and teachers and students were urgently cleaning up. The city's fire department also dispatched high-pressure water trucks to assist in washing away the mud.
"The desks in some classrooms are made of plywood and have rotted due to being soaked in water for too long. We are trying to clean them up so that students can return to school soon," said principal Le Thanh Son.

The school yard was covered with a thick layer of mud.

Hue City Military Command mobilized forces to help overcome damage and clean up schools after floods.
At Quang Trung Primary School (Thuan Hoa Ward), the first floor classrooms of first graders were flooded, books and school supplies were mixed in mud. Many parents and their children came to clean up the classrooms.
Nguyen Thanh Chi, a student in class 1/6, took out a pile of muddy books to dry, turning each page regretfully.
Ms. Ngoc Quynh, Principal of Quang Trung Primary School, said: "The school is still in disarray, the damage has not been fully assessed. Fortunately, thanks to the timely cooperation of the youth and soldiers, the mud was washed away with the flood water. If it had been slower, the dried mud would have stuck and would have been very difficult to clean."
According to the Department of Education and Training of Hue City, by the morning of October 31, 168/569 schools were ready to welcome students back. Schools that were still flooded or damaged are continuing to clean up and overcome the consequences. For areas that are deeply flooded, the education sector will flexibly organize online teaching and mobilize support forces to soon stabilize teaching and learning.
