Kon Tum Ngoc Linh Ginseng is granted geographical indication

Two ginseng companies in Kon Tum have just been granted the right to use the geographical indication "Ngoc Linh" for ginseng root products by the authorities.

Sharing with VnExpress , Mr. Doan Trong Duc - Deputy Director of the Department of Science and Technology of Kon Tum province, said that on August 10, this agency granted the right to use the geographical indication "Ngoc Linh" for ginseng products of Ngoc Linh Kon Tum Ginseng Joint Stock Company and Ngoc Linh Tu Mo Rong Kon Tum Ginseng Joint Stock Company.

Geographical indication is a sign used to indicate products originating from a specific region, locality, territory or country. The geographical indication code of Ngoc Linh Kon Tum Ginseng Joint Stock Company is C0001-SNLKTG. The number of certified ginseng products is 10,000 plants. Meanwhile, Ngoc Linh Tu Mo Rong Kon Tum ginseng has a geographical indication code of C0002-SNLKTG with a quantity of 2,200 plants.

Kon Tum Provincial Medicinal Materials Association is responsible for issuing, managing and granting "Ngoc Linh" geographical indication stamps to companies according to the quantity of ginseng roots exploited.

When this certification is granted, the company's products will be protected from counterfeit goods. In previous years, Ngoc Linh Kon Tum ginseng's brand name was continuously affected by counterfeit goods flooding the market. Many products exploited from other regions were labeled Ngoc Linh Kon Tum ginseng and sold at high prices but the quality was not guaranteed.

Certified companies must be responsible for complying with the Regulations on management and use of geographical indication "Ngoc Linh" for ginseng products of Kon Tum province and related regulations.

Ngoc Linh ginseng is grown on the mountain of the same name, in Kon Tum province. Over the past 40 years, domestic and foreign scientists have proven that Ngoc Linh ginseng is the rarest and best in the world today due to its outstanding properties and growing in a specific geographical area. Ngoc Linh ginseng has a high saponin content, and is listed as a national treasure of Vietnam - one of the most important medicinal products.

Kon Tum has about 1,240 hectares of ginseng. This quantity is mainly concentrated in Tu Mo Rong district with more than 1,190 hectares, the rest is in Dak Glei district.

Kon Tum also expects to develop about 4,500 hectares of Ngoc Linh ginseng and more than 10,000 hectares of other medicinal plants by 2025. By 2030, this number will increase to over 10,000 hectares of Ngoc Linh ginseng and the ambition is to become the largest capital of Ngoc Linh ginseng and medicinal plants in Vietnam.
