Pregnant woman with gestational diabetes causes the fetus to be overweight, the fetal heart rate is unstable, the doctor had to terminate the pregnancy at week 37, the baby weighed 5 kg.

Dr. Lam Hoang Duy, Obstetrics and Gynecology Center, Tam Anh General Hospital, Ho Chi Minh City, said that the baby's weight was equivalent to that of a 2-month-old baby. At birth, the baby's whole body was purple, and he was given oxygen and transferred to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), where he had his blood sugar tested and was screened for 73 diseases. After 2.5 days of monitoring in the NICU, the baby was breathing on his own and was able to go home with his mother.

Before the cesarean section, the doctor predicted that the baby was at risk of respiratory failure after birth, the mother was at risk of hemorrhage, requiring coordination between the obstetrician and neonatologist.

Pregnant woman Kim Ngan (32 years old, Phu Nhuan, Ho Chi Minh City) said that during her first pregnancy, she also had gestational diabetes and was treated with insulin by doctors at Tam Anh General Hospital in Ho Chi Minh City at week 35. However, at week 36, her water broke early and she gave birth to a healthy first child weighing 4.3 kg. After giving birth, her blood sugar returned to normal.

During her second pregnancy, she followed the check-up schedule when her gestational diabetes recurred. Despite her strict diet, her blood sugar level after insulin treatment remained high. During the 35-37 week ultrasounds, the fetus steadily gained more than 500g per week, her belly grew rapidly, and the pain persisted. Ms. Ngan had to be hospitalized for monitoring because the fetal heart rate was unstable from the 35th week.

On June 10, Ms. Ngan had abdominal pain and tension. Ultrasound showed that the fetus weighed nearly 5 kg in the middle of the 37th week of pregnancy. The mother's blood sugar level was 160 and did not respond well to insulin. The doctor determined that the health of both mother and fetus were at high risk if the pregnancy was prolonged and decided to perform an early cesarean section to protect the health of mother and child.

Doctor Duy said that higher than normal blood sugar levels in the mother are the cause of the fetus developing too quickly, leading to many risks: fetal heart failure, premature birth, respiratory failure, hypoglycemia, obesity, children with diabetes... Pregnant women with gestational diabetes are at risk of high blood pressure, cesarean section, hemorrhage, and children with diabetes in the future.

Women with a history of gestational diabetes in a previous pregnancy are at risk of having the disease again in subsequent pregnancies. Therefore, women need to lose weight before pregnancy, adjust their lifestyle scientifically , increase exercise, and build a suitable diet. When pregnant, women should follow the schedule of prenatal check-ups and regular blood sugar screening.
