Restaurant roof collapses on Mallorca island, injuring nearly 30 people

At least four people were killed and 25 injured when the roof of a restaurant collapsed on the Spanish island of Mallorca. The incident occurred around 8:30 p.m. local time on May 23 (early morning of May 24, Vietnam time).

The victims were of various nationalities, an emergency services spokesman said, adding that seven of the injured were in a critical condition and nine were in a serious condition. Rescuers were searching for more people who may be trapped under the rubble. Security forces have closed the coastal road to facilitate the rescue.

Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez sent his condolences to the families of the victims and said the government was ready to send "all necessary resources" to support local authorities.

The two-storey building is located in the Playa de Palma area, south of the Mediterranean island's capital, Palma de Mallorca. Mallorca is one of Spain's Balearic Islands, whose pristine waters and beaches attract more tourists than any other Spanish region after Catalonia. According to official figures, more than 14 million tourists visited the archipelago in 2023.
