Major landslide on National Highway 279: Traffic from Lao Cai to Lai Chau completely cut off

Due to heavy rain on the night of July 31 and the morning of August 1, a serious landslide occurred at K156 on National Highway 279, burying more than 80m of the road surface. The incident completely cut off the traffic route from Nam Xe commune (Lao Cai province) to Muong Than commune (Lai Chau province).

Mr. Pham Van Cuong, representative of Manh Cuong Company Limited, the unit that carried out the landslide repair, said: Due to the large volume of landslide (estimated at over ^10m3 ), immediately after the landslide appeared, the Company arranged 2 excavators and some means of transport to urgently repair the landslide from 2 sides.

Due to the large volume of rock and soil, the landslide site has difficult terrain, while the risk of landslides still exists, so the recovery work is facing many difficulties.

Authorities stretched out traffic control lines through the landslide to ensure traffic safety.

It is known that Nam Xe Commune Police have stretched ropes and temporarily stopped vehicles passing through the landslide area to ensure safety and create conditions for the construction unit to bring machinery to the scene to fix the problem. It is expected that by the end of the afternoon of August 1, the road will be cleared in the first step so that vehicles can temporarily circulate.
