Sporting Lisbon stuck to their initial asking price, leading to lengthy negotiations over Viktor Gyökeres. Arsenal and Sporting are said to have agreed a fee of £63.5m, made up of £54.8m up front and £8.7m in performance-related add-ons. However, British media reports suggest Arsenal could pay less than the rumoured fee.
Gyokeres leaves Sporting Lisbon after much controversy
In fact, the Gunners only had to pay £50.5 million up front, with £7 million in additional fees. This means the total value of the Swedish striker's deal is around £57.5 million instead of £63.5 million.
The information was confirmed by many reputable sources in England on July 25. After many weeks of intense negotiations, the Emirates team succeeded in bringing in one of the most impressive strikers in Europe last season. Viktor Gyökeres, 26 years old, scored 43 goals and had 15 assists for Sporting CP in all competitions in the 2024-2025 season, becoming the target of many big teams such as Chelsea, Man United and PSG.
However, Arsenal were the team that acted decisively and quickly reached a personal agreement with the Swedish player. Accordingly, Gyökeres will sign a 5-year contract with the "Gunners", receiving a salary of approximately 115,000 pounds/week. Notably, this striker accepted a salary reduction of nearly 2 million pounds per year so that the deal could be completed soon. He will wear the number 14 shirt - the number associated with the legendary Thierry Henry at Arsenal.
This is Arsenal's sixth signing in the summer of 2025, following Martin Zubimendi, Kepa Arrizabalaga, Christian Norgaard, Noni Madueke and Cristhian Mosquera. With the addition of Gyökeres, coach Mikel Arteta hopes to completely solve the problem of finishing - a factor that caused Arsenal to lose steam in the Premier League title race last season.
Gyökeres is currently in London to complete his medical . He is expected to join Arsenal's Asian tour in the coming days, with his debut likely to take place on July 31 against Tottenham in Singapore.
The arrival of Gyökeres is considered a big step forward in Arsenal's attack upgrade strategy, while helping the North London team become one of the biggest spending clubs in the 2025 summer transfer window, with the total amount spent exceeding £200 million.
If he can maintain his impressive form at Sporting, Gyökeres could be the missing piece for Arsenal to realise their ambition of conquering the Premier League and going far in the Champions League next season.
Arsenal have announced their fifth signing, signing centre-back Cristhian Mosquera from Valencia. The 21-year-old Spaniard has signed a five-year contract with the Emirates Stadium side, with the option to extend for a further year. The initial fee is around £13m, plus £3m in add-ons.
Mosquera will wear the number 3 shirt at Arsenal – a number previously worn by the likes of Ashley Cole, Bacary Sagna and most recently Kieran Tierney. Arsenal are expected to remain active in the transfer market, with potential targets currently including Eberechi Eze, Rodrygo and Anthony Gordon.
