After the storm, commercial activity resumed, serving the needs of consumers.

Observations at several traditional markets show that after Typhoon No. 5 passed, vendors have returned to cleaning and sanitizing their stalls and selling goods to consumers.

The supply of essential food items such as meat, fish, and seafood meets the needs of the people. Prices of basic food items remain stable compared to before the storm. According to a survey on August 27th, pork prices ranged from 100,000 to 120,000 VND/kg, beef from 200,000 to 230,000 VND/kg, and ready-to-eat chicken from 130,000 VND/kg…

Pork and beef prices have remained stable compared to the period before the storm.

In the fish and seafood section, the most commonly sold items are grilled fish, salted fish, frozen fish, and easily preserved seafood such as clams and mussels; the supply of fresh seafood remains quite limited. Prices are basically the same as before the storm, specifically: large grilled mackerel 25,000-35,000 VND/piece; grilled tuna 300,000 VND/kg; fresh pomfret 130,000-180,000 VND/kg; squid 220,000-250,000 VND/kg; farmed shrimp 200,000-300,000 VND/kg; sliced carp 250,000 VND/kg…

Ms. Nguyen Thi Lan, a fish vendor at Vuon Uom Market, shared: “On the morning of August 26th, I returned to selling after the storm, but I brought in less than usual because at this time, I mainly sell frozen goods that had been frozen beforehand. The prices of these items are still the same as before the storm. Many regular customers called to ask for fresh fish, but there wasn't any available at the moment because fishing boats near the shore haven't returned to sea yet.”

Although business has stabilized after the storm, the number of buyers remains limited. Small business owners report a significant drop in purchasing power. This is because most people are still focused on cleaning up after the storm, and many had stockpiled food before the storm. Furthermore, many areas still lack electricity, making it difficult to preserve food, thus limiting consumer purchases.

Mr. Trinh Thang Loi, a small trader selling dried food at Ha Tinh market, said: “The number of people coming to the market is sparse because demand is not yet high as people are still using up the food they bought before the storm. After the storm, some stalls were affected, and traders quickly cleaned up and repaired to resume business. However, since the storm, the market has still been without electricity, making business operations more difficult.”

Following the storm, consumption of food items remains limited.

Meanwhile, vegetables and fruits are experiencing better demand and slightly higher prices compared to normal days. Observations at markets show that vegetable prices have increased by about 20-50% compared to the period before the storm. Some popular types include: water spinach and mustard greens at 15,000 VND/bundle; morning glory at 10,000 VND/bundle; fragrant gourd, cucumber, and cabbage at 25,000 VND/kg; green squash and green eggplant at 20,000 VND/kg; tomatoes at 30,000 VND/kg; and lettuce at 45,000 VND/kg…

Ms. Bui Thi Phuong (Thanh Sen ward) shared: “On the morning of August 27th, I went to the market to buy 2 gourds, 3 tomatoes, and 1 pineapple, totaling 50,000 VND. Compared to normal days, this price is higher. However, after natural disasters like storms and floods, people have become accustomed to the increase in the price of green vegetables because the vegetables are damaged and production and harvesting are difficult.”

After the storm, the price of green vegetables increased by about 20-50%.

According to small traders, the price increase is due to damage from storms in some vegetable-growing areas and increased transportation costs. However, this time, vegetable prices have not increased as dramatically as in previous natural disasters.

“This storm was short-lived, didn't cause excessive flooding, and only affected the North Central provinces. Meanwhile, the supply of green vegetables for the Ha Tinh market, besides locally grown produce, mainly comes from Nghe An , northern provinces, and the Da Lat region. Except for Nghe An, production in these areas wasn't affected, so the supply is basically sufficient for the market. However, due to transportation difficulties in the rainy and windy weather, the import price is higher than usual, so we also have to increase our selling prices,” explained Ms. Nguyen Thi Loc, a vegetable vendor at Co Dam market (Co Dam commune).

According to traders, if the weather conditions are favorable for restoring production and harvesting, and the transportation of goods is stable, the prices of vegetables will return to stability about a week after the storm.
