Lithuanian Defense Minister Divile Sakaliene said in a recent interview with DW (Germany) that Vilnius could reconsider the ban on weapons of mass destruction to store nuclear weapons of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).

Minister Sakaliene said that it is necessary to assess the possibility of amending Article 137 of the Lithuanian Constitution if NATO allies propose specific plans to deploy nuclear weapons or components of nuclear weapons in the European Union (EU) country, along with considering other commitments.
Article 137 of the Lithuanian Constitution currently prohibits weapons of mass destruction and foreign military bases on the country's territory, but Sakaliene noted that no such proposal has been put forward in Vilnius.
The statement comes after Polish President Andrzej Duda's recent remarks about the US deploying nuclear weapons in Poland to deter Russia, a move he discussed with US Special Envoy Keith Kellogg.
Mr. Duda believes that US President Donald Trump could give the green light to bring nuclear warheads from Western Europe or the US to Poland.
However, US Vice President JD Vance expressed doubts about the idea on March 13, stating that he would be “shocked” if President Trump supported the transfer of nuclear weapons to Eastern Europe.
