According to Resolution No. 60 of the 11th Central Conference, Thai Nguyen province is expected to merge with Bac Kan province, with the administrative center located in Thai Nguyen.
Bac Kan and Thai Nguyen are two localities with many cultural similarities. Both provinces are home to the majority of Tay and Nung ethnic groups with many similar customs, festivals and cultural activities.
Historically, in 1965, the two provinces merged into one under the name Bac Thai. This is also a land rich in revolutionary traditions. In 1996, to meet the needs of socio-economic development in mountainous areas, Bac Thai province was split into Bac Kan and Thai Nguyen as it is today.
After the merger, the new province not only has all the elements for socio-economic development, but also brings advantages for tourism development with a unique tourist destination in Vietnam. That is Ba Be Lake, one of the 20 most beautiful natural freshwater lakes in the world that needs special protection and development.
