Sinner has a chance to usurp Alcaraz's world number one position at the Paris Masters

(Dan Tri) - The victory at the Vienna Open helped Jannik Sinner narrow the gap with Carlos Alcaraz in the race for the ATP number one position and opened up the opportunity to return to the top position after the Paris Masters.

Alcaraz has remained the world number one since winning the US Open in September. However, not participating in the tournament in Vienna puts the Spaniard at risk of being overtaken. Sinner is now only 840 points behind Alcaraz.

At last year's Paris Masters, Alcaraz reached the round of 16 and will be deducted 100 points from his total points reserve. Meanwhile, Sinner will not be deducted points in 2024 and will have the opportunity to add a maximum of 1,000 points if he wins in the French capital.

To take the number one spot, Sinner must win the Paris Masters and Alcaraz must fail to make it past the quarter-finals. If Alcaraz makes it to the semi-finals or higher, his number one spot will be secured.

Even if Sinner rises to number one after Paris, it will only be a temporary advantage. The Italian will have to defend 1,500 points at the ATP Finals in Turin, where he won last year. Alcaraz, meanwhile, only has 200 points to defend, giving him a big advantage in reclaiming the top spot.

However, Sinner still has significant momentum as he has not won any ATP Masters 1000 titles this year, in contrast to Alcaraz who has won three titles at Monte Carlo, Italian Open and Cincinnati.

The 2025 season saw a fierce competition between the world's two top players, facing each other in three of the four Grand Slam finals (Roland Garros, Wimbledon, US Open). Alcaraz won two, while Sinner won his first Wimbledon title.

Sinner arrived in Paris in fine form after a heroic comeback win over Alexander Zverev in the Vienna Open final (3-6, 6-3, 7-5). “I had to stay strong and make the right choices,” he said. “The third set was a rollercoaster. I’m very happy to have another title, it’s special.”

Sinner claimed that his consistency and ability to conserve energy in his service games were key to his victory in the final.
