The death toll from recent floods and landslides in three provinces on Indonesia's Sumatra island has risen to 604 while 464 people are still missing, the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) said on December 1, Xinhua reported.
"Rescue operations are still ongoing in the affected areas," BNPB informed.

The agency added that the floods had displaced about 570,000 people in the provinces of North Sumatra, West Sumatra and Aceh. Damaged roads, collapsed bridges and disrupted communication networks have left some affected areas inaccessible, with relief supplies being transported mainly by air.
Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto said on December 1 that the government 's rescue and relief efforts were being deployed at full capacity.
He stressed that Indonesia needs to respond effectively to climate change and local governments must play a bigger role in protecting the environment and preparing for future extreme weather conditions.
