Early construction of irrigation and drainage works for the communes: Nga An, Tan Tien, Ho Vuong

(Baothanhhoa.vn) - This year's rainy season has seen serious flooding in the communes of Nga An, Tan Tien, and Ho Vuong. The cause is that the drainage system of the culvert under the Can River dike is not working effectively. Therefore, it is necessary to soon build irrigation works to protect agricultural production and the daily life of local people.

The rice area in Nga An commune was flooded due to the impact of storm No. 5.

Although storm No. 5 has passed for more than a week, the water level in Nga An commune's rice fields is still 2/3 submerged in water, with a relatively high risk of damage. According to statistics from Nga An commune's People's Committee, during the two heavy rains caused by storms No. 3 and No. 5, more than 530 hectares of rice were flooded in the commune. Of these, more than 220 hectares of rice were completely submerged and 312 hectares of rice were 2/3 submerged.

Mr. Mai Van Quang, Chairman of Nga An Commune People's Committee, said: In the past two heavy rains and storms, Nga An commune encountered many difficulties in draining water to protect agricultural production areas. Although the Commune People's Committee closely directed and mobilized local forces and means to clear the flow, aiming to speed up the drainage of water in the fields, the results were not high. Up to now, although the rains and storms have passed for many days, there is still a lot of water in the fields, causing great damage to the production of local people.

Through research, we learned that the drainage in Nga An commune depends on the Truong Son River (also known as An Thai River). This river originates from the old Nga Thien commune (now Ba Dinh commune). The Truong Son River is responsible for draining water for the communes: Nga An, Tan Tien, Ho Vuong, through the culvert under the dike to the Can River in Tan Tien commune. Therefore, the drainage depends largely on the tide. When the tide is low, the culvert under the dike can be opened to drain water. On the contrary, when the tide is high, the culvert under the dike must be closed to prevent tidal water from entering, so the drainage is not effective. In recent days, due to heavy rain, the tide has also risen, the culvert must be closed, so the drainage in the fields has been extremely slow and difficult, causing damage to the agricultural production of local people.

According to statistics, the communes of Ho Vuong, Nga An, and Tan Tien have more than 3,000 hectares of agricultural production depending on the drainage of the Truong Son River. In order to drain water quickly and effectively, especially when there is heavy rain or flood discharge, it is necessary to invest in building a pumping station at the Truong Son sluice in Tan Tien commune. Currently, the communes have just started operating a 2-level local government, so the budget is still limited and difficult, unable to ensure funding for investing in the construction of pumping and drainage works. Therefore, the local authorities and people hope that the Provincial People's Committee will soon have a plan to arrange capital to invest in building a pumping station at the Truong Son sluice, in order to protect agricultural production and the lives of local people.
