There is some noteworthy information in the special advisory of the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) on the risk of a super earthquake in the Nankai Trench.
"The risk of earthquakes around the Nankai Trench, a submarine trench that runs along the Pacific coast, is higher than usual," the JMA warned recently. The Nankai Trench stretches about 700 kilometers, from Suruga Bay off Shizuoka Prefecture to the Hyuganada Sea off Miyazaki Prefecture.
If a major earthquake were to hit the region, the damage would be devastating. Tsunamis generated by the quake could reach heights of more than 30 meters near the epicenter. The JMA has urged residents to prepare for possible earthquakes for at least a week.
When an earthquake occurs near a coastal area, tsunamis can reach the coast of Shizuoka, Wakayama, and Kochi prefectures within 2-5 minutes; tsunami heights can reach more than 30 m according to a 2012 estimate.

When people feel the shaking, they need to evacuate to higher ground as quickly as possible.
In the worst case scenario of a Nankai Trench earthquake, 231,000 people could die and economic losses could reach 207 trillion yen. The earthquake could plunge the entire country into crisis.
The Japanese government has instructed 707 cities, including Tokyo, to step up disaster preparedness measures.
The JMA's warning came as southwestern Japan was shaken by a 7.1-magnitude earthquake on the afternoon of August 8, injuring 14 people.
According to Japan News , JMA previously estimated that there is a 70%-80% chance of a super earthquake of magnitude 8-9 occurring along the Nankai Trench within the next 30 years.
