Spotify Technology announced that it will roll out a messaging feature for both free and paid users, aiming to attract more listeners and strengthen its position against competitive pressure.

This is considered a strategic move in the context of the company expanding its video library, implementing monetization programs for podcast creators and aiming to reach 1 billion monthly active users.

According to information from the Swedish company, the new feature allows users to chat and share music with people they have interacted with on the platform.

Starting this week, the service will roll out on mobile to users aged 16 and over in select markets.

Spotify tested a messaging tool before but had to pull it in 2017 due to low engagement.

This time around, the company is betting on its strong subscriber growth in recent years to restore functionality while also gaining market share.

The streaming music service had 696 million monthly active users in the second quarter and is on track to hit 1 billion, according to the Financial Times.

Spotify is also expanding its video library and launching a partnership program for podcast creators to monetize their content./.
