Using disease-resistant cassava varieties to improve production efficiency

(GLO)- According to the plan, localities in Gia Lai province will plant over 77 thousand hectares of cassava in 2025. To date, the whole province has planted over 17 thousand hectares, reaching more than 22%. Localities are mobilizing farmers to use some cassava varieties that are disease-resistant and have high yields.

Taking advantage of the cool weather, Mr. Ro Lan Kep (Hle village, Ia Pia commune, Chu Prong district) planted 3 hectares of cassava. He said: “After learning about cassava varieties that are resistant to diseases, this year, I planted 1 hectare of HN140 variety and 2 hectares of KM41 variety. When planting, the commune agricultural officer instructed me on the techniques of thoroughly drying the soil and fertilizing before planting.”

Not far away, Mr. Ro Lan Ben’s 1.5-hectare farm (in the same village) also planted KM41 cassava more than 2 weeks ago. Mr. Ben said: “From experience from previous years, I dried the soil thoroughly and tilled it with a plow so the soil was loose and porous, helping the cassava to sprout quickly.”

Mr. Kpa Thoac - Chairman of Ia Pia Commune People's Committee - informed: This year, the whole commune planted more than 200 hectares of cassava, reaching nearly 100% of the area, of which, more than 50% of the area used cassava varieties HN140 and KM94. "The steep hill area cannot be converted to other crops, so people have continuously grown cassava for many years, leading to soil degradation. In addition, people have the habit of planting old cassava varieties, so the yield is low and the ability to resist diseases is poor. In the future, the commune will continue to mobilize people to use new varieties and increase training on pest control techniques," said Mr. Thoac.

At this time, people in Ia Mo commune (Chu Prong district) are also focusing on planting cassava for the winter-spring crop. Mr. Nguyen Tuan Anh - Chairman of Ia Mo commune People's Committee - said: This year, the commune plans to plant more than 200 hectares of cassava. With the support of the district's Agricultural Service Center, farmers have planted more than 80% of the area, including 9 hectares of HN5 cassava and nearly 100 hectares of KM94 variety.

According to Mr. Luu Hoai Hung - Director of the Agricultural Service Center of Chu Prong District: Up to now, the whole district has planted 1,754 hectares of cassava, accounting for 32.6% of the area. Through review, in the district, only more than 30% of the area of people registered to use cassava varieties that are less susceptible to mosaic disease such as KM94, HN5; the remaining area mainly uses old cassava varieties. The Center is promoting the introduction of new cassava varieties into cultivation and will continue to coordinate technical training for growers.

Meanwhile, Mr. Tran Dinh Duc - Deputy Head of the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Ia Pa district - said: In 2025, the district will plant more than 8,300 hectares of cassava. To date, the whole district has planted nearly 80% of the cassava area, of which 180 hectares use the HN5 variety and some cassava varieties that are resistant to mosaic disease. The department is also coordinating with localities to propagate and advise people to choose disease-free cassava varieties provided by reputable plant breeding facilities.

Speaking to reporters, Mr. Hoang Thi Tho - Deputy Head of the Provincial Department of Cultivation and Plant Protection (Department of Agriculture and Environment) informed: This year, the whole province plans to plant over 77 thousand hectares of cassava. To achieve high efficiency, local authorities need to encourage people to use cassava varieties HN5, HL-RS15, KM98-1, KM94, KM140.

“In the long term, localities need to have plans to propagate disease-free cassava varieties that are resistant to mosaic disease and build areas to produce disease-free cassava varieties; combine the transfer of breeding technology according to technical processes for farmers to apply in order to gradually replace old, degraded varieties with low productivity,” Mr. Tho emphasized.
