Little-known effects of milk on high blood pressure

High blood pressure occurs when the pressure in the artery walls exceeds normal levels and puts pressure on the heart's activity. If left untreated, this condition will increase the risk of heart attack and stroke, according to the health website Healthline (USA).

Drinking milk in moderation can help improve high blood pressure.

The risk of high blood pressure increases with age, weight gain, smoking, a family history of high blood pressure, and lack of regular exercise. Diet also plays a role in high blood pressure, especially in people who eat a lot of salt and lack potassium. This is why the American Heart Association recommends that people with high blood pressure add potassium to their daily diet.

Potassium helps balance sodium levels in the body and reduces pressure inside the artery walls. Men are recommended to consume 3,400 mg of potassium per day, while women should consume 2,600 mg of potassium per day. Foods rich in potassium include bananas, sweet potatoes, fish and milk.

In addition to its high calcium content, milk also contains electrolytes such as potassium and magnesium. These are minerals that help regulate blood pressure. On average, a glass of low-fat milk will have about 390 mg of potassium and 30 mg of magnesium.

Additionally, a study in the British Journal of Clinical Pharmacology found that milk has another agent that helps lower blood pressure. Normally, the ACE enzyme narrows blood vessels, thereby increasing blood pressure. Doctors often prescribe blood pressure medications to inhibit the ACE enzyme.

However, milk contains proteins that act similarly to ACE inhibitors. As a result, milk can help regulate blood pressure in people with high blood pressure but does not lower blood pressure in healthy people.

In addition, researchers note that although milk can help regulate blood pressure, drinking milk alone cannot control blood pressure. To effectively control blood pressure, patients need to see a doctor and take medication when necessary.

Changing your lifestyle to a healthier one is also extremely important. Patients need to eat a healthy diet, prioritizing foods such as plants, fish and lean meat, while limiting foods high in salt, red meat, and alcoholic beverages. Regular exercise is also essential and is considered a natural way to help control blood pressure, according to Healthline .
