Over 80 still diligently writing
In his memoir Sweet and Sour Life of a Writer , writer Nguyen Manh Tuan did not choose to write chronologically, but through 11 conversations with close colleagues to recount his creative process.
According to writer Lai Van Long, the memoir is like a summary of Nguyen Manh Tuan's half-century of writing, creating a lot of inspiration for readers, especially those who are passionate about literary creation.
Dr. Ho Khanh Van shared that when reading Sweet and Sour Life of Literature, she seemed to forget that it was a memoir, but thought it was a novel and was drawn into it because it was so attractive. There are Nguyen Manh Tuan's attitude and professional philosophy, and interesting stories that seem to recreate a memorable period of literature and cinema.

Although Sweet and Sour Life of a Writer is a personal story, Nguyen Manh Tuan does not put his memoir into a narrow circle of personal praise. It is the sharing, experiences and concerns of a writer who loves and understands his profession.
With the historical novel The Wiser Than the King , Dr. Ha Thanh Van thinks that Nguyen Manh Tuan has marked a remarkable turning point in his creative journey.
If before his strengths were realistic prose and film scripts that closely followed contemporary life, then with The Wiser Than the King the writer entered another realm by blending historical material with fiction and reflecting ideology.
The central character of the work is the famous mandarin To Hien Thanh under four Ly kings, outstanding for his integrity, loyalty and extraordinary political courage.
Although appearing in history books with many praises, the image of To Hien Thanh has not been deeply exploited in modern literature. This choice is therefore both new and highly difficult, requiring the author to handle historical data delicately while still ensuring the appeal of the novel.
Nguyen Manh Tuan, author of famous books and movies
Ms. Trinh Bich Ngan, President of the Ho Chi Minh City Writers Association, emphasized that over 40 years ago, writer Nguyen Manh Tuan consecutively released two novels , Standing Before the Sea and Cu Lao Tram, which created a spiritual whirlwind in the literary life, a publishing phenomenon.
Now in his 80s, he continues to attract attention by simultaneously publishing two books, one about his career, Sweet and Sour Life of Literature , and a historical novel , The Wiser Than the King .
Born in Hanoi , Nguyen Manh Tuan joined the war and went to the South. He has been attached to Ho Chi Minh City since 1975 and since then has had a brilliant writing career.
Not only writing, he also works in the fields of film and theater. Over 50 years of writing, Nguyen Manh Tuan has an impressive portfolio of works, including 9 short story collections, 12 novels, 17 movie scripts, 23 TV scripts, 2 stage scripts, and 2 children's books.
Regarding movies, he is the author of a series of famous films such as Bright Sea, Far and Near, Legend of the Capital, Grand Tutor Tran Thu Do, White Blouse, Blood Money, Journalism, Sky Net, Street Singer Life ...
In literature, he is considered a best-selling writer with many books having a circulation of over 100,000 copies.
"Nguyen Manh Tuan's works at that time caused a stir in public opinion, created conflicting opinions, contributed to enriching the vibrant and democratic literary life, and promoted social progress. When mentioning the success or failure of Vietnamese literature over the past 50 years, writer Nguyen Manh Tuan is the most reliable and convincing witness" - Ms. Bich Ngan expressed.
